La ciudad estratificada: el caso de Lausanne

Abstract

Todos entendemos la ciudad como un elemento vivido y vivo. Una materia en continua transformación por las necesidades y aspiraciones de sus habitantes. La trama urbana se expande continuamente, pero también se rehace, convirtiendo las ciudades en una superposición de capas. Lausanne es el paradigma de la superposición. Todo empezó por el vínculo entre la orografía -que conformaba el territorio ya antes de la implantación de la ciudad- y la trama urbana que se instaló -no sin riesgo- en ella. La ciudad ha disputado una lucha constante con su entorno. Fue fundada sobre un monte rodeado por dos ríos -la Louve y el Flon- y ello le confirió una situación estratégica, una posición preeminente que, a la larga, sin embargo, ha sido un impedimento para la expansión natural de la ciudad contemporánea y, sobre todo, ha llevado a la ciudad a preocuparse continuamente por enhebrar sus distintos fragmentos y estratos. La compleja orografía complica la superposición y relación de las distintas capas, desconectándolas. Proponemos un análisis diacrónico de los estratos que forman el Lausanne contemporáneo para localizar y entender las desconexiones que entre ellos se producen. Debemos entender el agua -los ríos y el lago Léman- como la primera capa intraestructural del territorio. Así, la ciudad de Lausanne, en su evolución hacía una metrópolis extensa, ha dominado su agua -a veces contra natura- escondiendo el curso del rio. Quizás sea ahora el momento de que la ciudad reivindique su huella.

We all understand the city as a lived and alive element. A substance in continuous transformation for the needs and aspirations of its inhabitants. The urban fabric is continually expanding, but it is also being reworked, turning cities into a superposition of layers. Lausanne is the paradigm of superposition. It all started with the link between orography -which already formed the territory before the implantation of the city- and the urban fabric that developed within, not without risk. The city has disputed a constant struggle with its surroundings. It was founded on a hill surrounded by two rivers - the Louve and the Flon - and this conferred upon it a strategic location. This prominent position, however in the long run, has been an impediment to the natural expansion of the contemporary city. Above all, this has led the city to continuously be concerned about threading its various fragments and strata. The complex orography complicates the superposition and the relationship of the different layers, resulting in a disconnection. We propose a diachronic analysis of the strata that make up contemporary Lausanne in order to locate and understand the disconnections that occur between them. We must understand water -such as the rivers and Lake Léman- as the first infrastructural layer of the territory. Thus, the city of Lausanne, in its evolution towards an extensive metropolis, has dominated its water - sometimes against nature- hiding the path of the river. Perhaps now, time has come for the city to claim its footprint.
