¿Es la ciudad un paisaje cultural y su lectura la de su patrimonio consensuado y reconocido? ¿O es un artefacto en evolución constante y la narración apropiada es la de su transformación social?
Siendo la vivienda la materia esencial y mayoritaria de su cuerpo -“su carne y su piedra”- ¿será la descripción de los procesos de uso y forma de las casas del hombre la de la entera ciudad?
¿Es la movilidad la que explica su extensión? ¿Quizás la energía de la ciudad se mide por la de sus grandes proyectos colectivos -de asumida trascendencia y ambición-? ¿0 debemos fijarnos en el goteo continuo de las pequeñas acciones que colmatan y renuevan los tejidos urbanos asegurando su vitalidad?
En fin, ¿es la imagen de la ciudad la de sus monumentos e iconos -las casas de dioses y príncipes- o es más propia -aunque menos fotogénica- la imagen de lo “común”?
Esas son las preguntas que nos hacemos desde el Centre de Recerca Urbana del Camp (CRUC ETSA-URV) con motivo de la elaboración -por encargo- de una humilde guía, “Hechos urbanos”, de la ciudad de Reus. Son cuestiones que nos planteamos ante distintas guías de ciudades, libros de viajes, atlas urbanos, textos históricos y literarios que incitan a la reflexión y a la duda. Todo en la paciente espera del definitivo encargo que aún no ha llegado.
Empezamos ahora a tener alguna certeza de lo que puede ser una “Guía de arquitectura” y de lo que no queremos que sea la nuestra: ni un álbum de cromos de caras atractivas ni un atlas de memoria y nostalgia. Ni siquiera el hilo conductor de una apresurada visita a la ciudad. Proponemos, desde la ciudad del presente y con nuestra memoria -sumada a la de los que nos antecedieron-, entender la “guía” como una herramienta necesaria para enhebrar la ciudad del futuro, donde las nuevas políticas lleven a nuevas formas urbanas y las nuevas agendas a nueva creatividad. No sabemos cómo hacerlo, pero tenemos algunas intuiciones. Ojalá lo logremos.
Is the city a cultural landscape and its reading that of its consensual and recognized heritage? Or is it an artifact in constant evolution and the appropriate narration is that of its social transformation?
As housing is the essential and main material of its body - "its flesh and its stone" - will the description of the processes of use and form of the houses of man be that of the entire city?
Is it mobility that explains its extension? Perhaps the energy of the city is measured by that of its large collective projects -of assumed importance and ambition-? Or should we look at the continuous trickling of small actions that fill and renew urban fabrics ensuring their vitality?
In short, is the image of the city that of its monuments and icons -the houses of gods and princes- or is the image of the "common" more proper -although less photogenic?
Those are the questions that we ask ourselves in the Center for Urban Research of the Camp (CRUC ETSA- URV) on the occasion of the elaboration - by request - of a humble guide, "Urban Facts", of the city of Reus. These are questions that we ask ourselves considering different city guides, travel books, urban atlases, historical and literary texts that incite reflection and doubt. Everything in a patient wait for the definitive commission that has not yet arrived.
We are now beginning to have some certainty of what an "Architecture Guide" can be and what we do not want ours to be: neither a sticker album of attractive faces nor an atlas of memory and nostalgia. Not even the conducting thread of a hasty visit to the city. We propose, from the city of the present and with our memory - added to that of those who preceded us - to understand the “guide” as a necessary tool for threading the city of the future, where new policies lead to new urban forms and a new agenda to a new creativity. We do not know how to do it, but we do have some insights. Hopefully, we can achieve it.
