The town and oasis of San Pedro de Atacama, located in the Atacama Desert, has been, since the beginning of the 21st century, one of the Chilean sites with the highest number of tourist arrivals. The start of this phenomenon, we can identify it in the second half of the 20th century, due to the archaeological discoveries made by the priest Gustavo Le Paige. At first, that pre-Columbian legacy promoted a scientific tourism that later, at the end of the 20th century, changed to an ecotourism linked to the unique urban characteristics of the town, a merged between the organic morphology of the oasis and the Spanish grid, immersed in the sublime of the driest desert in the world. The current panorama is composed by the juxtaposition between the tourist activity, which means a floating population that requires leisure spaces, over the agricultural and livestock activity of the oasis itself, which is being lost through the abandonment of the orchard and the gentrification of the town, whose inhabitants have progressively formed peripheral settlements around the oasis, without following the expression of local architecture and disarticulated from the scarce supply characteristic of this arid area. This phenomenon is presented as the expression of mass leisure in an abusive and unthought-of way, which Georges Candilis mentions in Architecture and Urbanism of Mass Tourism in 1973, which has an impact on the idea of the current town and has opened the debate on methods in urban planning that can mitigate the effects on the touristification process, as well as architectural and urban conservation.
