This communication belongs to an initial PhD investigation about in between spaces as city generator, in which these spaces are identified as a space in between public and private. One of the aims of this investigation is to identify which mechanisms generate this kind of space, in order to use them for the regeneration of obsolete and collapsed urban fabric. The following communication thinks about the in between spaces in perimeter blocks (called courtyards) that were constructed in the second half of the 20th century in Euskadi’s three capitals. Besides, after reviewing the urban literature about the second half of the century we can observe that this reflection is unfinished. The aim will be faced: -through the review of three investigations about urban developments of the second of the 20th century in Basque capitals: Martinez (2009) for Bilbao, Tejada (2016) for Donostia and Luque (2011) for Vitoria-Gasteiz; -by the methodology López de Lucio and Hernández Aja (1995) used to analyze the perimeter block based developments in the Community of Madrid after open block developments of 60 and 70 decades. This way we will be able to characterize “the courtyards” in the latest perimeter block developments, detecting its strengths and weaknesses, so that we can achieve an effective urban space looking to its character and use.
