El proceso de desarrollo y transformación de áreas urbanizadas en la segunda mitad del siglo XX consolidó una explosión del tejido urbano en las metrópolis europeas. Los trazados se fragmentan y pierden la lógica de la continuidad espacial. Relacionado con este contexto están las principales infraestructuras de movilidad que desempeñarán un papel importante en la interconexión y conexión entre fragmentos. Los sistemas lineales emergen donde la infraestructura es el soporte físico o referencia para un cierto orden del territorio urbano.
Morfológicamente, pero a menudo también socialmente, estos sistemas urbanos lineales incorporan características físicas similares a la calle (en un contexto consolidado), a pesar de tener configuraciones y modos de apropiación muy particulares. Estos sistemas, en sus variaciones tipológicas, se entienden como formas que emergen de la calle, una calle metropolitana.
En este sentido y reconociendo el papel fundamental de la calle como elemento estructurante de los trazados urbanos, el artículo busca contribuir al debate sobre la valorización de tales elementos urbanos emergentes y esenciales en la (re) estructuración del territorio metropolitano. Mediante una descomposición sistémica y teniendo el contexto urbano portugués como un campo de observación, se pretende resaltar el potencial del espacio intermedio [ in-between ] entre la infraestructura y los edificios, como un lugar de consolidación formal de la calle metropolitana. Trabajamos con la hipótesis de que el espacio intermedio es una oportunidad para la intervención urbana. Tomando como casos de estudio la carretera nacional 14 (N14), Trofa o la Via de Cintura Interna (VCI), Oporto, el espacio intermedio se entiende como un mediador, un espacio de transición, que contribuye a un eje de infraestructura más integrado y promueve la calidad espacial y urbana.
The process of development and transformation of urbanized areas in the second half of the 20th century consolidated an explosion of the urban fabric in European metropolises. The urban layouts became fragmented and lose their spatial continuity logic. Related to this context are the main mobility infrastructures that will play an important role in the connection between different fragments. Linear systems emerge where the infrastructure is the physical (or reference) support for a certain ordering of the urban territory. Morphologically, but often also socially, these linear urban systems incorporate physical characteristics similar to the Street (in a consolidated area), despite very particular configurations and modes of appropriation. These systems, in their typological variations, are understood as emerging forms of the street, a metropolitan street. In this sense and recognizing the fundamental role of the street as a structuring element of urban layouts, the article seeks to contribute to the debate on the valorization of such emerging and essential urban elements in the (re) structuring of the metropolitan territory. Through a systemic decomposition and having the Portuguese urban context as an observation field, it is intended to highlight the potential of the intermediate space [in-between] between infrastructure and buildings, as a place of formal consolidation of the metropolitan street. We work on the hypothesis that the in-between space is an opportunity for urban intervention. Taking as case studies the national road 14 (N14), Trofa, or the Via de Cintura Interna (VCI), Oporto, the in-between space is understood as a transition space, contributing to a more integrated infrastructure axis and promoting quality spatial and urban.
