Abstract
Fiber compositions in concrete and mortars is a subject that has been studied in recent years. The use of natural fibers is of great interest, because not only do they improve the mechanical characteristics of cement mortars, but they are also renewable, availability is high and inexpensive, which makes the use of sea fiber more widespread.
Despite the fact that most of the research carried out shows encouraging results, it’s also true that the use of vegetable fibers in cement matrices presents deficiencies in terms of durability. The main cause of this loss of resistance is due to the alkalinity of the matrix and that the fibers undergo volumetric changes, in addition to the predisposition that exists to attack by microorganisms in humid environments.
he objective of this work is to compare the use of vegetable and synthetic fibers in cementitious matrices, taking into account that the post-cracking characteristics will be modified and with the use of natural fibers the consumption of non-renewable raw materials will be reduced, therefore that will compare the properties in the fresh state of mortars with fibers, determining which material is more sustainable.
In this research, reference mixtures were made with two types of binder, Portland cement type I and with metakaolin additions, in addition to 2 types of fibers, in proportions of 1, 2 and 4% by volume with respect to the mortar. Fibers can be selected for their laboratory availability, mechanical properties, costs. The fibers were natural and made of PVA (polyvinyl acetate). Fresh runoff and density were determined. In addition, the sustainability study was carried out with the MIVES methodology and program developed by Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya.
