Abstract
In this work, the implementation of plasticized ISOs (Ion Selective Optodes) combined with an ionic liquid (IL) into PADs (Paper-based Analytical Devices) for selective colorimetric determination of anions (e.g. Chloride ion: Cl-) will be demonstrated.
Instead of a conventional plasticizer, a dyed plasticizer, which is a complex of an IL and the pH-sensitive colorimetric indicator (chromoiophore), will be used acting as membrane solvent and optical transducer. In previously reported articles1, introduction of hydrophobic room-temperature ILs as plasticizers enhanced the capability of the anion-selective bulk optodes. Additionally, a dyed plasticizer can introduce an excess amount of a chromoionophore into the optode membrane, which is expected to result in vivid colorimetric signals on paper substrates.
To achieve a rapid assay of the target ions, nanoparticle-based IL-doped ISOs will be applied into PADs for anion determination. While classical film-based optodes are rather robust and effective, they are bulky, and their response time can be quite long for PAD-based assay because of their film thickness. Recently, minimization of ISOs (e.g. polymeric particles, micelle-based particles) has emerged as an alternative to classical bulk ISOs to expand their application Nano- or microspheres of ISOs provide extremely rapid response time for the target ions compared to film-based ISOs2.
