Field operations for oil wells take place in harsh conditions and places that are not usually reachable, making a difficult task to provide technical support to working crews, field engineers and other professionals in the matter. Wireline operations constitute key activities during the whole life of an oil well that usually require technical support, e.g. in the event of an unexpected surface equipment failure, tool malfunctioning or any other case where the continuing of the operations is on risk. Due to far location of oil wells, support normally is provided by ground transportation which, depending on where operational bases are located, can take several hours forcing crews on location to standby time which is translated to non-productive time (NPT) costs.By analyzing the feasibility in technical and economic terms of a real time video support, this work intends to provide a study for the oil & gas industry, specifically in wireline operations. The major benefit of such a system would be to aid operation managers decide whether or not mobilize personal, equipment and other resources that may increase normal operation costs, substituting those, when applicable, by video instructions and direct interactions with field engineers or field technicians.
The oil and gas industry makes usage and takes advantage from a variety of resources, technologies, and industry breakthroughs in order to accomplish one single but yet compound aim: Produce in an economical and environmentally sustainable way the required amounts of oil and gas to fulfill a global demand. Several technologies perfectly fit the oil and gas industry needs such us well-drilling technologies, well completion technologies, well production technologies and for the case of this study, well evaluation technologies. Within the well evaluation technologies, this study focuses its application in the wireline logging technology. This technology, when correctly applied, delivers core well formation information so that a well can continue its life cycle toward production. In the present time, where internet connectivity is helping to increase efficiency within so many other industries around the world, it is not the exception that the oil and gas can make a profit out of this as well. The present study analyzes economically and technically the feasibility of using a real-time video support system for wireline operations in the Ecuadorian oil and gas industry. Its current situation suggests technical support for wireline operations requires to add a video feature to its communications to avoid ambiguity. In order to maintain a technical conversation through audio and video, the design includes highlighting or markup tools. The study includes an assessment of the project which consists mainly of cost estimation and risk and quality management plan. The lack of high-quality and reliable companies that develop software in Ecuador may be a cause of attention during the implementation face. VIII Finally, the project goes through an economic evaluation process which provides a Net Present Value (NPV) and Payback period, among other economic indicators, as evidence of the feasibility of the project.
