This thesis has been conducted during my internship at GTD Sistemas de Información, between September 2017 and January 2018. The work focuses on the study and design of several estimators capable of providing a good response in front of any trajectory described by ALTAIR’s launcher. ALTAIR is an international European Commission H2020 project that seeks to demonstrate the feasibility of an innovative launch system addressed to the small satellite market (2.1). This system is composed of an autonomous unmanned carrier, an air-born launcher, and an innovative and compact ground segment. Within ALTAIR, GTD is responsible for the development of the launcher avionics and for its navigation and flight safety system, as well as for the high-level definition of the ground segment. According to the ALTAIR concept of operations, the carrier takes off with the launcher and brings it to a required altitude, where it is then released and ignited. This maneuver, together with the entire launcher performance, demands a complex trajectory and state-of-the-art navigation system ableto deal with an in-flight initialization– required to reduce operations in ground, thus leading to an increase in the launching frequency– and an hybridized software, which enables a reduction in mass (2.3). Certainly, the use of this whole system is thought to generate benefits in a future since the launch frequency rate would be increased and the fuel consumption reduced. For that reason, this study places its attention on one of the most important elements of ALTAIR’s navigation system: the estimator. Then, passing through a brief definition of ALTAIR’s navigation system (4), an identification and subsequent implementation of state-of-the art estimators (5,6), and a comparison process (7), this thesis tries to prove if it is necessary to substitute the actual estimators used in ALTAIR’s navigation system for those developed in this project.
