Structural dynamic façade

Abstract

Second skin façades are used to improve the building physics of a façade not for structural reasons. This research at the Eindhoven University of Technology focuses on the structural advantages of form-active lightweight second skins façades using their dynamic structures behaviour. By detaching the form-active façade from the rest of the building, larger deflexions are possible. Their flexible behaviour and the dynamic structural response to (wind)loading reduces the internal forces and optimizes the efficient use of material. The second skin takes a global stabilizing role as a main structural element.
