dc.description.abstract | PURPOSE: To determinewhether amblyopia is associated with changes in retinal thickness.METHODS: Study design was observational, combining retrospective and prospective elements. Twenty-nine subjects aged between 4 and 12 yearsand with a diagnosis of refractive amblyopia were eligible for the study, and were divided into two main groups: anisometropic refractive amblyopia or isometropicrefractive amblyopia. All patients received acompleteoptometric and ophthalmologic examination, including uncorrected and best distance corrected visual acuity, refraction, binocular exams, pupil dilatation and Optical Coherence Tomography (3D OCT-1000; Topcon), which assessedmacular thickness (in severalpredetermined areas) and macular volume.Three measurements were performed: the first visit, after three months and at the end of the treatment.RESULTS: The mean age of the subjects was7.03 ± 2.83 years. In this study, statisticallysignificant differenceswere foundin inter-ocular difference (in absolute values)for central macular thickness between patients with refractive anisometropic amblyopia andisometropic(p=0.031), in which the largest inter-ocular difference corresponded to the isometropic group.Statistically significant differences were found in the anisometropic group between amblyopic and fellow eyes, for total macular volume(p=0.041)and for superior ring 1 (S1)(p=0.047), and almost significant differences for central macular thickness(p=0.062), center (C1)(p=0.068)and temporal ring 1 (T1)(p=0.055).CONCLUSIONS:The study of macular thickness in patients with anisometropic amblyopia may be useful to understand the functional changes associated with this condition. Therefore, the implementation of ocular fundus examination by Optical Coherence Tomography is recommended in patients with amblyopia |
