dc.description.abstractThis project is intended to provide a methodology for the design and the control of a hybrid power system to be implemented in an island. The suggested hybrid power system is a combination of diesel generation and a solar array. This combination of energy sources have been proof to be reliable enough for the electrification of remote areas. As the hybrid system is intended to operate disconnected from the network, there would also be studied the inclusion of a energy storage system. The thesis reviews in depth all the components which are found in the microgrid structure. In particular, the two-level Voltage Source Converter, whose design, model, control and simulation is crucial for the proper operation of the microgrid. All simulations are carried out to check the operation and behaviour of the microgrid. In addition to the theoretical study on the control of the PV-diesel hybrid energy system, the final part of the project focuses on the sizing of a real microgrid system for the island of Corvo. The installation is designed in accordance with the consumption and resources of the island.
