Abstract
Tunnelling in urban areas constitutes a challenge due to the impact of ground settlements on existing sensitive buildings. A procedure to mitigate that impact consists of constructing a diaphragm wall (or a row of piles), separating the sensitive building from the tunnel, prior to the excavation of the tunnel itself. The TFM considers this geometry and analyzes the mechanical problem, first by means of classical elastic solutions and after that, by using a Finite Element Code, as Plaxis.
