The main objective of this project is to study the implementation of strategies of passive design in the airport of Girona Costa-Brava (LEGE). This design is based on the most rigorous and demanding current standards of passive building that allow Girona Costa-Brava airport to reduce its energy consumption by up to 90%, covering the HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) of the building almost completely. On the other hand, in order to achieve the airport's energy self-sufficiency, the implementation of photovoltaic panels as a renewable energy source has been studied to complement the terminal's energy demand. These two solutions would no longer depend directly on the REE, the Spanish electricity grid, and would thus greatly reduce emissions from the building. The concept of passive-building has been studied to implement it on the terminal building of the airport, based on the Passivhaus standard adapting its criteria to the climatological conditions of the place. In order to carry out a possible implementation of these strategies, we have studied the orientation, the internal temperature of thermal comfort and the prevailing winds of the area, among other factors, which have a direct influence on the energy performance of the building. These factors have been analyzed through the Sustainable Design Analysis Software Ecotect and the EnergyPlus calculation engine database. The analysis of the passive design strategies carried out can cover the demand almost completely, but in order to obtain a self-sufficient airport, an oversizing of a photovoltaic system, composed of high-performance polycrystalline panels, has been studied, with which to be able to fully cover the energy demand of the terminal. This facility has been designed taking into account its location and orientation with regard to solar radiation using the Photovoltaic Geographical Information System (PV-GIS) programme, provided by the European Commission and the official Document DB-HE 5 of the building technical code (CTE). For the calculation of the energy consumption in the used software, consumption has been taken into account between 2010 and 2020, and a standard year has been created with the overall average. However, a hypothetical future consumption of the airport has also been studied in order to retain this advantage over the next few years. The results obtained with the implementation of these two improvements have shown that more energy is generated and accumulates than the airport actually consumes, and will consume in the future with an increase in the flow of passengers. In this way, it can be said that the airport will remain in the category of energy-sustainable airports over the next few years.
