Study of the contact resistance of high voltage electric connectors

Substation connectors are used in electrical substations, to make connections between conductors or bus bars and between conductors and the power transmission line. It is important to ensure a good contact between connectors and conductors, in order to do not lose energy because of the contact resistance between the two bodies. The contact resistances of such connector types are in the order of some micro-ohms. Although they can seem mispricing values, they cannot be ignored because of the induced power loss. In the surface of the aluminum bodies it grows an insulating film of alumina, which generates a high resistance film. Nowadays, before assembling the connector-conductor connections, the surface is cleaned by scratch brushing, but the alumina film is not fully removed. This study proposes an innovative surface cleaning treatment to reduce this contact resistance. In order to verify its operation, different laboratory tests were applied. First of all, a theoretical research of the state-of-the-art was performed. Tests results confirmed that this new proposed treatment can effectively reduce the contact resistance compared to the traditional method. The contact resistance of the analyzed substation connectors which were cleaned by means of this surface treatment was less than those cleaned with the traditional treatment. They also heated up less when applying standard temperature rise tests, thus indicating a better thermal performance. In addition this work compares the contact resistance predicted by existing theoretical models found in the technical literature with those obtained experimentally. By this way an approximated expression of the contact resistance is found , which matches pretty well with experimental measurements.
