Abstract
Lean principles and practices have been widely adopted in manufacturing over the last decades but recently spread its applicability to other industry environments. Their use in the warehouse environment has been slower to get wise even though some researchers think that its application can contribute to the achievement of lower costs of operations and the increase of flexibility and efficiency. Lean warehousing has become necessary and plays a critical role that must be integrated into the entire supply chain, which is increasingly becoming a pull approach driven by customer demand. The academic literature on the subject of lean warehousing is still short, and lacks of case studies that reflect the applicability of lean tools in warehousing. This study aims to contribute with an application of a conceptual analysis in a real warehousing setting. The framework followed has been taken from literature and proposes three different lean tools to apply for such analysis. Starts providing an extensive analysis with the 5W lean tool of the 7 Wastes (“muda”), complemented with a numerical analysis to assess the impact of such waste in the daily warehouse operation. Then, with the application of 5S lean tool in the warehouse processes, several suggestions of implementation are presented in order to control waste, smooth material flows and standardize processes. All proposals are illustrated in a future state VSM that compared to the current state VSM permits to obtain the value of improvement. The findings reveal that significant benefits can be obtained with the application of lean tools in the warehouse operation.
Descripció
The aim of this thesis is to apply a new system of the lean management of a warehouse to a real case study to validate this approach and highlight possible limitations and lines of improvement.
