Abstract
The research on railway electrification systems has come a long way in improving the efficiency and speed of electric locomotives. An essential criterion while assessing the effectiveness and quality of the system is the dynamic interaction between the pantograph and the catenary. Various modelling techniques have been employed using different mathematical approaches. The main aim of this thesis is to evaluate the possibility to model the pantograph/catenary system using a new semi-analytical based approach. The method adopted will be evaluated, and conclusions will be drawn out regarding its overall operation and its potential as an approach to solving future models.
