CIRCULAR DESIGN: Exploration of a new product-market combination using recycled plastic

Abstract

[CASTELLÀ] Lankhorst Euronete Group BV o “Lankhorst” es una gran multinacional que opera principalmente en la Europa Occidental y América latina. Entre otras áreas, son pioneros en el uso de plástico reciclado procedente de los residuos plásticos generados en la agricultura y en el uso de su famoso compuesto polimérico llamado KLP (formado mayoritariamente por polietileno) el cual está presente en un amplio abanico de productos. Sin embargo, debido a las políticas de sostenibilidad que entrarán en vigor el 2050 en los Países Bajos, la empresa quiere poner rumbo hacia un modelo de empresa basado en la economía circular. Para abordar el siguiente problema, Circular Design, Learning for Innovative Design for Sustainability ha llevado a cabo un proyecto junto a Lankhorst para encontrar una forma de acercar más a la empresa hacia el camino a seguir dentro de las metas de diseño sostenible. El proyecto consiste en el diseño de un nuevo producto en un mercado inexplorado por la compañía y que incorpore el modelo de la economía circular. Durante el período de dos meses y medio se han realizado estudios de benchmarking, nuevas tendencias, creación de modelos de negocio sostenible, diseño conceptual de producto y prototipaje. Finalmente se ha encontrado una idea de producto que encaja en el briefing y se ha desarrollado así como el diseño conceptual del sistema y servicios a su alrededor siguiendo las pautas de la economía y el diseño circular.

[ANGLÈS] Lankhorst Euronete Group BV or "Lankhorst" is a large multinational that operates mainly in Western Europe and Latin America. Among other areas, they are pioneers in the use of recycled plastic from the plastic waste generated in agriculture and also due to its famous compound called KLP (composed mainly by polyethylene) which is present in a wide range of products. However, due to the sustainability policies that will enter into force in 2050 in The Netherlands, the company wants to move towards a business model based on the circular economy. To address the following problem, Circular Design, Learning for Innovative Design for Sustainability has carried out a project with Lankhorst to find a way to bring the company closer to the path within the goals of sustainable design which consists of the design of a completely new product-market combination that incorporates the circular economy model. During the period of two and a half months the team has been developing benchmarking and new trends studies, creation of sustainable business models, conceptual product design and prototyping. Finally, a new product-market combination for Lankhorst was chosen by the team for developing the system and services around it following the economy and the circular design guidelines.
