Abstract
[ANGLÈS] The Netherlands is experiencing extreme weather in terms of rainfall and heat stress, caused by the global warming. Very heavy and short rains (which the drains and canals are not able to withstand) as well as long periods of heat for which the cities are not prepared. To tackle this issue, Circular Design Learning for Innovative Design for Sustainability together with Smart Leeuwarden have embarked on a project with the aim of designing a circular system that allows to reuse this excess of water, collecting and storing it effectively. Without forgetting the sustainability of the project and following the circular economy principles. During three months period of research and prototyping sessions, the team have evolved several solutions. Where finally it have come up with the idea of a modular design for the streets, which in addition to keep the main goal of the project promotes green areas in the city. The solution allows the reuse of existing roof drains, includes a design of recycled plastic pipes which allows self-irrigation of green areas and allows the storage of large amounts of water for long periods.
