A process-aware tool for the worldwide request and distribution of medical supplies for Chagas

Abstract

Las enfermedades tropicales desatendidas (ETD) son un grupo de enfermedades transmisibles que prevalecen en condiciones tropicales en 149 países. Afectan principalmente a las poblaciones que viven en la pobreza, sin saneamiento adecuado y en estrecho contacto con insectos u otros tipos de animales que pueden portar estas enfermedades. Estos medicamentos no tienen un coste muy alto, pero para estos países que viven en pobreza, conseguirlos es muy difícil. La OMS es uno de los principales proveedores de estos medicamentos y recae en ellos la capacidad de distribuirlos para poder ayudar a estos países e intentar conseguir la erradicación de estas enfermedades. Este proyecto pertenece a uno mayor y dentro de este, es el segundo, siendo la continuación directa del primer proyecto realizado, en aquel se desarrolló un sistema para las previsiones de medicamentos. En este se ha construido un aplicación para permitir a las diferentes instituciones repartidas por el mundo que puedan solicitar estos medicamentos a la OMS y de esta forma sustituir el proceso rudimentario que había hasta hoy en día. Al principio, el proyecto estaba destinado a ser usado para la enfermedad de Chagas, sin embargo, debido a los aspectos comunes en el proceso, se espera que también sea utilizado por otras ETD. Los diferentes procesos implementados dentro de este proyecto incluyen el "Request Process" y "Manage Temporal Institutions" entre otros, pero principalmente está todo concentrado en el primero. Además, la tesis está compuesta de dos tareas principales: la preparación del entorno y aprendizaje de estas herramientas y el desarrollo. Debido a la naturaleza del problema, se eligió una herramienta de BPM para todos los proyectos, en este caso, Bonita BPM. Durante el desarrollo se tuvo que formalizar el proceso para pedir medicamentos para de esta forma poder traspasarlo a un proceso digital con BPM, además, durante la creación de este, debido a las limitaciones de Bonita BPM, se vio que para la creación de usuarios se debía hacer desde el exterior mediante llamadas API.

Neglected tropical diseases (NTD) are a group of communicable diseases that prevail in tropical conditions in 149 countries. They mainly affect populations living in poverty, without adequate sanitation and in close contact with insects or other types of animals that can carry these diseases. These medicines do not have a very high cost, but for the countries that live in poverty, getting them is very difficult. WHO is one of the main providers of these medicines and holds the responsibility to distribute them in order to help the countries and to try to eradicate these diseases. This project belongs to a larger one and within this, it is the second one, being the direct continuation of the first project carried out, in that a system for the predictions of medicines was developed. In this an application has been built to allow the different institutions around the world to request medicines from the WHO and in this way replace the rudimentary process that had been present up to nowadays. In the beginning the project wasmeant to be used for the Chagas disease, however, due to commonalities in the process, it is expected to be used by other NTDs too. The different processes implemented within this project include the "Request Process" and "Manage Temporal Institutions" among others, but mainly it is concentrated in the first one. In addition, the thesis is composed of two main tasks: the preparation of the environment and learning of the tools and development. Due to the nature of the problem, a BPM tool was chosen for all the projects, in this case, Bonita BPM. During the development "Request Process" had to be formalized to be able to be transfered to a digital process with BPM, also, during the creation of this, due to the limitations of Bonita BPM, the creation of users was required to be done through an external formusing API calls.
