Abstract
Water vortex power plants are presumed to combine energy production with a fish way for up
and down-stream migration at the same time. The authors present the construction of a water
vortex power plant in a lab with special design to investigate the upstream and downstream fish
migration.
3D Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) offers a flexible technique for the determination of
velocity fields and surface heights in flows. In this project, a prior analysis of the PTV
methodology and the software used has been carried out, the MoveInspect of the AICON
company. Posteriori has been carried out a study of the surface velocities of the water and of
its heights in the 1: 1 prototype of a water vortex turbine, using MoveInspect.
The PTV methodology has already been proven to be able to study with some good results
flows with turbulences and vortices, but for small laboratory researches, with a controlled
environment.
For this reason, the other main objective has been to validate MoveInspect for flows with
turbulences and vortices, and to work in places where the conditions of the environment are
difficult to control and big study areas. To be able to validate it, it has been necessary to
compare the results of MoveInspect with methodologies more habitual such as ultrasonic
sensors and vectrino.
The other main objectives of this project are to study the behavior of the water surface
