Abstract
Every construction project has an origin; it arises from a human necessity, which in turn results in a range of requirements that the project is intended to fulfil. In most of the cases, the design, construction and operation of a building entail a large impact not only on the people who live and work in it, but also on the growth and development of our communities. Furthermore, it has associated a big responsibility towards the environment and the consumption of many natural resources. Sustainable design has become nowadays the main way for increasing the energy efficiency and reducing the negative impact on the human health and the environment.
This document if the main report of a Bachelor’s Thesis that will cover several subject matters within the Building Engineering area. It emerges from the necessity of providing a new building as a student accommodation for the VIA University College Campus in the city of Horsens (Denmark). The expected future location is already set; a large plot in the West part of the city is available for the implementation of the new building and other several facilities of the university complex. From the problem formulation, the core purpose is the development and achievement of a complete building solution that meets the basic requirements of functionality, habitability and safety along with the sustainable design goal, which is aimed at being the hallmark of this project and a valuable asset.
The current report (and its appendices) does not constitute an official construction project documentation; it intends, however, to be a research paper and provide enough tools, means and detailed solutions that could be the basis for a possible future execution of the student accommodation. The different parts included in this project can be gathered in three main parts: setting of existing conditions and requirements, sustainable design of building services and structural analysis and design.
As a starting point, the main task is mostly analytical and consists of gathering and analysing the existing conditions and all the needs and requirements that have to be met. All this content is, in fact, the basis for undertaking the first project outlines; through the preliminary design, factors such as the building shape, the structural system, the orientation or the choice of materials start to be approached. The compilation of all the codes of practice, standards and regulations results also a crucial task within the first steps of the project.
As the preliminary phase advances, the design becomes more detailed and can include a more exact definition of the main building services, construction methods, sustainable strategies and structural elements. Along with the design process, the structural system analysis is performed in order to prove its load-bearing capacity and suitability.
Finally, the completion of all these project stages together with the addition of urban planning and project management matters leads to the achievement of the final result and main project’s purpose: an integral and sustainable design for the new student accommodation.
An extended focus on sustainable options, a deep analytical task and a solid framework of codes and regulations make possible the consideration of the whole final result as a highly efficient solution that meets the requirements.
