The subject matter of this thesis was suggested by my mentor Prof. Ing. Maurizio Costantiniwhen I, a general engineer finishing her master in structural and construction specialization, have asked him to be my advisor emphasizing my interest in acquire knowledge about Building Information Modeling (BIM) methodology and its application to building design. The project consists in planning and designing afreestanding day surgery facility using BIM procedure. It has been more than adequate to be the basis of my thesis since it jointthe aimof doing research work in day surgery field, of improvingmy skills in building design and increasing my knowledge aboutBIM methodology. The different phases of the project development are detailed in this document. The first steps of this project are summarized in Chapter 1and Chapter 2, which include respectively, information about the day surgery healthcare discipline and its current situation in the world and in Italy and the definition of the activities that this discipline implies. The workflows related to day surgery activities are defined in theChapter 3together with the spaces required to carry out these activities correctly. In this chapter the day surgery unit design is sketched and rationalized. In Chapter 4it is made a study of the Autonomous Province of Trento population with the aim of fixing a location for the day surgery structure. Subsequently, it is done a study of the population scope the unit is going to supply with day care service and an analysis about the sizing of theday surgery unitfunctional areas. In Chapters 5 and 6, it is made an introduction to thebuilding fire safety andto the day surgery distribution design. This distribution design is carried out from an unlimited budget approach, a fact that subsequently leads to the question of what would be the consequences for the distribution design of the reduction of this budget. In this way, two subsequent studies with tighter budget approaches are generated. Finally, in Chapter 7it is made an introduction to the facility design that a day surgery structure requires to function correctly. The installation design of these facilities is not developed. The results of this project are more extensive than expected since initially it was planned to achieve only a design of an efficient freestanding day surgery unit. However, as the project has been developed, different approaches and problems have arisen and being solved, what has resulted in three different distribution designs related to three different freestanding day surgery units located in Trento, each one obtained from diverse budget approaches and with different efficiencies. On a personal level, I have improved my skills ina building design of a not only technically but conceptually along with the increase of software capabilities obtained from applying the BIM methodology to practical cases
