Evaluation of advanced natural ventilation potential in the Mediterranean coastal region of Catalonia

Three largest Catalonian cities are chosen: Barcelona, Terrassa and Tarragona and each city geo-location represents a different climate type according to Köppen-Geiger climate classification. The purpose of this study is to provide useful data and guidelines, primary for architects, engineers and policy makers, in order to visualize the climate potential for cooling energy savings using Advanced Natural Ventilation (ANV) system. Atrium is one of the key architectural components for generating ANV principleswhich are driven by the buoyancy effect. This research presents an overview of possible refrigeration energy savings of ahypothetical four storiesatrium office-building model calculated with the building energy simulation.The aim of thepresentedoutputis to improve the understanding of ANV potential in this particular Mediterranean region and to promote its use as an energy efficient approach in the modern building design.
