Abstract
There are uncountable many options to connect offshore wind turbines within the collector system. The importance of an optimal cable size and layout is clear considering the large investments that are required to connect a string of wind turbines to the substation and the resulting cable losses and the reliability that is determined by its design. The objective of this work is to optimize the cable size for a given offshore wind farm considering the power losses and the costs. This is done by using a multi-objective function and finding the optimal point of the Pareto-front. First, a literature review should find related works, mathematical models and approaches to solving such design problems. In particular, aspects of for example the line modelling to calculate the cable losses, a suitable algorithm to solve such sets of equations and cost functions are of interest to develop an adequate approach. Having a basic understanding of the key aspects, the methodology will be derived to solve the problem. Thirdly, the mathematical model is formulated that should reflect the above-mentioned constraints. Finally, the proposed model is applied in a case study and to investigate the model the results will be presented and discussed. In the end, conclusions will be derived and further open questions and possible extensions will be pointed out.
