Abstract
The main objective of this project is to design an automatic control system for a new RNP arrival procedure for aircraft at the Barcelona - El Prat airport proposed in a previous final degree project, considering the airspace surrounding the airport and the expected impact generated, in terms of environmental impact and air traffic controllers workload. The Point Merge System (PMS) was developed by EUROCONTROL and is based on the merge of arrival flows of aircraft at a single point of entry into a TMA, taking advantage of the navigation capacity in the precision area of an aircraft. Its purpose is to reduce the workload of air traffic controllers, as well as to increase the capacity of incoming traffic in a TMA. In addition, the implementation of the PMS also contributes to reducing emissions and/or noise, and to improving safety levels. These improvements are achieved with a closed procedure and trying that the procedure generates the necessary separations, increasing the length of the routes of the aircraft. In keeping with the objective of the project, a program has been designed capable of organizing the flow of the airplanes in a completely autonomous way for the specific case of the PMS at the Barcelona airport. This program could have two purposes. On the one hand, it could be a support system for the air traffic controllers that would suggest which aircraft should carry out the 'direct to' to the Merge Point and at what specific moment of time. In addition, considering that the program managed to overcome the appropriate certifications, air traffic controllers could be freed to indicate this heading to the aircraft and allow them to focus on more value-added work. In order to check the performance of the program, simulations were carried out using real traffic, data source extracted directly from EUROCONTROL. Subsequently, we have proceeded to analyse them to determine that this system is really feasible.
