R2EM - Resource Recovery and Environmental Management
R2EM group is developing research activity on development of sustainable urban and industrial waste management cycles based on resource recovery approaches promoting circular solutions of waste to product and waste to energy. Research also involves efforts on developing environmental remediation solutions for soils and ground water remediation, process and environmental monitoring and environmental risk assessment on ports.

Liquid–Liquid membrane contactors incorporating surface skin asymmetric hollow fibres of poly(4-methyl-1-pentene) for ammonium recovery as liquid fertilisers
(2022-01)
Article
Restricted access - publisher's policyTwo novel hollow-fibre liquid–liquid membrane contactor (HF-LLMC) modules, containing S-type (skin layer with low porosity) and Q-type (skin layer with higher porosity) fibres, have been evaluated. Both fibres, with ... -
Removal of nitrate from groundwater by nano-scale zero-valent iron injection pulses in continuous-flow packed soil columns
(Elsevier, 2022-03)
Article
Restricted access - publisher's policyInjection of zero-valent iron nanoparticles (nZVI) into aquifers has gained increasing attention of researchers for in-situ treatment of NO3--contaminated groundwater. nZVI has proved efficient in chemically reducing NO3- ... -
Integration of nanofiltration and reverse osmosis technologies in polyphenols recovery schemes from winery and olive mill wastes by aqueous-based processing
(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2022-03-01)
Article
Open AccessMore sustainable waste management in the winery and olive oil industries has become a major challenge. Therefore, waste valorization to obtain value-added products (e.g., polyphenols) is an efficient alternative that ... -
Anticipatory life cycle analysis framework for sustainable management of end-of-life crystalline silicon photovoltaic panels
(Elsevier, 2022-04-15)
Article
Open AccessIn this research, a framework for performing Anticipatory Life Cycle Analysis (a-LCA) has been developed to identify the sustainable end of life (EoL) management option for crystalline silicon photovoltaic (PV) panels. ... -
Recovery of rare Earth elements from acidic mine waters by integration of a selective chelating ion-exchanger and a solvent impregnated resin
(Elsevier, 2021-10)
Article
Restricted access - publisher's policyA polymeric ion-exchange resin, incorporating methyl-amino-phosphonic (TP260) functionalities, and a solvent impregnated resin (SIR) incorporating tri-methylpentylphosphinic acid (TP272), were evaluated for the selective ... -
Chapter 5 - Recovery of high-added value compounds from dairy and winery agro-food industries using electrodialysis
(Springer, 2021)
Part of book or chapter of book
Restricted access - publisher's policyElectrodialysis (ED) is an established technology, which can separate ionic species applying an electrical potential. ED is widely used in water desalination for drinking water production, seawater concentration for table ... -
The environmental management of small ports – challenges and options
(2021)
Conference report
Open AccessIt is widely acknowledged that small ports (including small-island ports) play a vital role in the supply chain, in general transport connectivity, and in the day-to-day life of their communities. Sometimes classified as ... -
Development of a standardized tool to calculate carbon footprint in ports
(Universidad de Cantabria, 2020-10)
Article
Restricted access - publisher's policyPorts are essential contributors of a country’s economy. One of the significant environmental threats in ports is Climate Change due to carbon dioxide emissions generated by different activities in these areas. In the ... -
Customized screen-printed electrodes based on Ag-nanoseeds for enhanced electroanalytical response towards Cd(II), Pb(II) and As(V) in aqueous samples
(MDPI AG, 2021-06-30)
Article
Open AccessElectrochemical analysis based on screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) represents a great alternative to conventional analytical methods such as ICP-MS or LC-MS due to their portability, sensitivity, selectivity, and ... -
Integration of membrane processes for the recovery and separation of polyphenols from winery and olive mill wastes using green solvent-based processing
(Elsevier, 2022-04-01)
Article
Open AccessWinery and olive mill industries generate large amounts of wastes causing important environmental problems. The main aim of this work is the evaluation of different membrane separation processes like microfiltration, ... -
Recovery of polyphenols from agri-food by-products: the olive Oil and winery industries cases
(2022-02-01)
Article
Open AccessThe production of olive oil and wine are two of the main agri-food economic activities in Southern Europe. They generate large amounts of solid and liquid wastes (e.g., olive pomace, olive mill wastewater, grape pomace, ... -
Selective precipitation of calcium ion from seawater desalination reverse osmosis brine
(2021-12-15)
Article
Open AccessThe near zero liquid discharge (NZLD) approach, by recovering water and dissolved valuable salts, is the most attractive clean solution for the valorisation of brines from seawater desalination reverse osmosis (SWD-RO) ...
