Abstract
The bituminous mixtures are one of the main materials used in the
construction of road surfaces. Because of the great investment that they suppose,
it is important to characterize them correctly to ensure their durability during the
design period and consequently, to improve the maintenance cost.
Talking about the layers that constitute the pavements, the rolling layer is
the most superficial and the one that is directly in touch with the effects of the
traffic and the meteorological phenomena. It also has indirect repercussions on the
safety and comfort of the users. For this reason it has always been in the point of
view of the researchers, in order to find new essays or materials which can be used
to estimate better their behavior in real conditions.
This is why the present work has been developed from a research on
resistance to plastic deformations in the rolling layers, carried out in the Civil
laboratory from the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department of the UPC
(Barcelona). With this purpose, a series of test pieces have been analyzed through
the wheel tracking test in which different parameters have been changed to be able
to be compared. Contrasting these results with those obtained by the Marshall test.
The aim of this report is to be able to determine how the thickness and the
content of bitumen could influence in the most superficial layers of our pavements.
As a consequence of the first results obtained, the decision of test two different
particle sizes was taken. With them it has been possible to study the modification
of several parameters such as: the thickness, the compaction method, the test
temperature and the type of bitumen.
With the analysis of all the information obtained from the tests carried out,
a series of recommendations have been established relating to the mixtures and
manufacturing methods used.
