Abstract
This report will show the process of
the development of co-sleeper, called
Newborn Cocoon, a safe environment
that allows mother and baby to safely
co-sleep. The co-sleeper will be used in
a hospital and a domestic environment.
Therefore a thorough research was
important. The research part gives a lot
of background information that is needed
for the development of the newborn
cocoon. After desk research two visits to
the hospital took place in order to get to
know the context of use. Measurements
of beds and cribs were done, different
types of rooms were analysed and the
hospital staff was interviewed. After the
research phase, a lot of sketching was
done in order to end up with a concept
that answers all the specifications. Out
of a selection of the most promising
concepts two concepts were selected in
close cooperation with the supervisors
of the project. These two concepts knew
a further development, with mock-up
models and a test in the hospital. After
one of the two concepts was selected this
concept was finalised and resulted in a
life-size model. Strength calculations
were done on this concept, using the
3D-software SolidWorks. Also included
in this report are a business part about
how the trade will work after production
and a usability part. This part contains
the needs of the user, the design drivers
and the specifications. In the appendix the
personal reflections of the team members
on the project can be found.
