Abstract
Nowadays most of our society has the necessity to be connected to the internet, whether it is to keep in touch with their friends or family, to visit social networks, to get the latest news, etc. It's for that reason that more and more, establishments such as restaurants, shopping malls and even public places like City Halls have been investing in Wi-Fi technologies to satisfy clients and the citizens. In fact, it's not surprising that different technological companies (automotive, mobile equipment, etc.) are developing their products with support to Wi-Fi included. In this document, we have carried out a background study and analysis of the most advanced standard released to the market so far. We are obviously talking about the IEEE 802.11ac standard; this standard offers high transmission speeds and has the capacity to support MU-MIMO technologies. Furthermore, it works in a frequency band that is not very used, the 5 GHz band, thus avoiding most of the interference that we could have in the typical of 2.4 GHz band. Throughout the sections devoted to provide a theoretical background, we will argue the reasons why the IEEE 802.11ac standard has higher speeds than previous ones. We will also explain what MU-MIMO technologies are based on and the new rules that are incorporated into this standard for medium access. Furthermore, we provide a comparison between the different Wi-Fi bands in order to understand why there is such a difference in interference levels. After the theoretical background we present the results of an exhaustive measurement campaign intended to assess the performance in terms of the throughput, the real speed that the network is able to support at application level, both for the IEEE 802.11ac standard and the IEEE 802.11n. Those measurements have been done as function of the distance and the number of clients on the network. By doing this we have been able to check the performance limitations of a Wi-Fi product with commercial IEEE 802.11ac. Lastly, we have studied the coexistent of two Wi-Fi networks to analyze, with different scenarios, their combined behavior.
estándares anteriores a él.
comportamiento.
