De derecha a izquierda: superposiciones de la Catedral de la Santa Creu i Santa Eulàlia a través del Barrio de la Catedral

Abstract

Un paseo alrededor del Barrio de la Catedral de Barcelona a la manera de una lectura de derecha a izquierda, desde los posibles futuros a los diferentes pasados, reales o inexistentes. Un paseo sin prejuicios que irá descubriendo multitud de capas de historias superpuestas, casi imperceptibles al ojo inexperto. Un paseo formando una idea a través de la transformación de un estrato de la ciudad alrededor de un ícono ‘inacabado’ conocido como la Catedral de la Santa Creu i Santa Eulàlia, tras de casi dos mil años de historia. El caso de Barcelona, más allá de su manera háptica y densa de hacer ciudad -tradicional de los pueblos que colonizan el Mediterráneo- muestra una característica de gran importancia: su capacidad de adaptación. Y es que este enclave mediterráneo ha estado condicionado desde su origen a diferentes límites físicos, lo que lo ha llevado a desarrollar esta habilidad hasta su maestría. Originalmente situada en el monte Táber y colindante a la costa, se desarrolló intramuros hasta que en el s.VI-XI se realiza la primera ampliación de las murallas. Ésta volvería a verse sobrepasada, ampliándose a principios del s.XIII-XIV alargando su vida hasta el s.XVIII, época en la que se produce el sitio militar de Felipe V y la ciudad llega a la asfixia. Las murallas caen finalmente en el año 1873 momento en el que se plantea la propuesta de ensanche, colonizando el territorio hasta quedar en la actualidad rodeada por sus límites físicos: el delta del Llobregat, el río Besòs y la sierra del Collserola. El hecho de estar siempre bajo unos límites tan estrictamente definidos, ha supuesto que la ciudad necesite de diferentes herramientas de transformación a lo largo de toda su historia para poder afrontar esta condición, convirtiendo la adaptabilidad en acervo cultural de su actitud social y arquitectónica. Parece que este sentido lejos queda de la arquitectura y mucho más alejado de la identidad del sujeto colectivo, aunque está más presente si lo vemos de la siguiente óptica: considerando que la identidad es gen de la memoria y la tradición y estos, como una serie de hábitos dentro de un contexto a través del tiempo, podemos entender la adaptabilidad del pueblo catalán como parte de su ser social y por tanto arquitectónico.

A walk without prejudice that will discover a multitude of layers of stories superimposed, almost imperceptible to the untrained eye. A walk forming an idea through the transformation of a stratum of the city around an ‘unfinished’ icon known as the Cathedral of Santa Creu and Santa Eulàlia, after almost two thousand years of history. The case of Barcelona, beyond its haptic and dense way of making a city - traditional of the towns that colonize the Mediterranean - shows a characteristic of great importance: its capacity of adaptation. And it is that this Mediterranean enclave has been conditioned from its origin to different physical limits, what has taken to develop this ability until its masters. Originally located on Mount Táber and adjacent to the coast, it was developed intramuros until in the s.VI-XI the first expansion of the walls was realized. This would be again surpassed, expanding at the beginning of the s.XIII-XIV extending its life until the s.XVIII, time in which the military site of Felipe V is produced and the city suffers asphyxiation. The walls finally fall in the year 1873 when the proposal for expansion is proposed, colonizing the territory until it is currently surrounded by its physical limits: the Llobregat delta, the Besòs river and the Collserola mountain range. The fact of being always under such strictly defined limits has meant that the city needs different tools of transformation throughout its history in order to face this condition, making adaptability into a cultural heritage of its social and architectural attitude. It seems that this sense is far from architecture and much more remote from the identity of the collective subject, although it is more present if we see it from the following perspective: considering that identity is a gene of memory and tradition and these, as a series of habits within a context through time, we can understand the adaptability of the Catalan people as part of their social and therefore architectural being.
