Abstract
This project aims to the analysis and later modelling of the thermal behaviour of electronic components such as capacitances. Several simulations have been studied and some variations regarding main aspects such as geometry, physical properties, material arrangement, etc have been taken into account. Also, some theory about electric failures have been stated and the causes of these malfunctions. In the first chapter, history, types, structure, performance, etc, of capacitors have been introduced, as well as some previous studies regarding to the thermal behaviour modelling of this kind of electronic components. Some sections have been also dedicated to the theoretical background that there is behind heat transfer, differential equations (specifically the heat equation) and all knowledge needed to make the project more comprehensive. A realistic model of layered-dissipated power has been developed. It's been carried out following this layered internal structure of different materials (composing the actual capacitors' cores). Unidimensional and bidimensional simulations have been done considering a space and time discretization. Bidimensional results have shown lower temperatures than the ones found in unidimensional simulations. This is discussed in the conclusions The irreversibility of the capacitors' degradation has been concluded too, studying the entropy of the process.
