This survey about the present state of the art of the enumerative methods focuses the problem under three points of view: methodology, experimental development and theoretical foundations. The first part of the paper deals with the methodological point of view and the results obtained are used in order to give a comprehensive exposition of many of the classical algorithms of branch and bound and implicit enumeration including some of the last extensions about penalties, best projection criteria, surrogate constraints and others. The second part of the paper is devoted to expose the results of the main experimental research linea about branch and bound made possible by computer codes such as UMPIRE, MPSX-MIP, OPHELIE-MIXED, FMPS, etc. We summarize the results exposed by several authors. Finally we end this survey including some considerations about the theory of the lagrangian relaxation applied to the MILP problems, considering it as a theoretical framework for the enumerative methods.
