International Symposium on Energy Geotechnics (SEG)
The I International ‘Symposium on Energy Geotechnics’ SEG2015, was held in Barcelona, Spain, in June 2nd- 4th 2015, on behalf of the Technical Committee on Energy Geotechnic (TC308) of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) (http://www.issmge.org/en/)
The Symposium venue was the Barcelona School of Civil Engineering (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya).
Geotechnical engineering has expanded its domains into the field of Energy Geotechnics. This branch of geotechnical engineering will play a fundamental role in the near future due to the increase in energy demands in the next decades associated with economic development and population growth worldwide. Geotechnical engineering is at the core of the energy challenge.
The following main topics were covered in this Symposium:
- Gas hydrate sediments.
- Unconventional hydrocarbon. Hydraulic fracturing.
- Energy geo-structure and storage of thermal energy in the ground.
- Energy geo-storage.
- High level radioactive waste disposal.
- Carbon dioxide geological storage.
- Fundamentals of geo-energy.
- Other geotechnical activities related to the energy sector.
