dc.description.abstract | Introduction: The known musculoskeletal disorders that appear in Down syndrome can affect the support during gait, with consequent impacts in the foot and in the kinematic chain of the lower limb. Objective: To determine the plantar pressures and their distribution during gait in children/adolescents with Down syndrome (DS). Material and Methods: The sample comprised two groups of 32 children / adolescents, one with DS and the other without pathology (CG). The support time, vertical reaction force and plantar pressures were recorded during walking (Footchecker platform), and compared between both groups. Results: The duration of support was higher (p <0.0001) in the DS group. The vertical reaction force and the average pressure did not differ significantly. The peak pressure on the plantar surface was lower in the DS group (p <0.05). The DS group showed a lower percentage of load both in the hindfoot and forefoot and higher in the midfoot, especially in its internal part (4%). Conclusions: The DS group presented a longer duration of support and less pressure peaks, probably for a flatter gait, which makes the load to be shared between several areas of the foot. They also presented a variation in the distribution of pressures on the plantar surface, with a greater involvement of the midfoot, especially in the internal zone. |
