Abstract
[ANGLÈS] Floods are relatively common disasters in Europe. The presence of human activities on
potential flooding zones leads to the necessity of studying and mapping those areas in order to
define risks and minimize damage. European Flood Directive (FD) urges member states to
implement flood maps providing information only about the return periods of interest.
There are several sources of uncertainty in the determination of flooding areas such as the
wave data, the topography, the analysis methodology or the inundation model used. FD
directive gives no clue about how to deal with these sources of uncertainty.
The aim of this thesis is studying the uncertainty in the determination of flooding areas due to
the selection of the methodology of characterization of events, given a return period of
interest. In order to do so, the response approach and the event approach have been
compared using Tordera’s delta as floodplain (Mediterranean NW).
In terms of run up, results show increasing differences between methods, getting results with
the response approach a 20% higher than with the event approach, for the 100 years return
period. When the storm surge contribution was included to determine the total water level, a
drop of the differences between methods from the previous 20% to a 14% was observed, for
being the event method more sensitive to that contribution.
This involves also differences between methods when the flow discharge is calculated, which
are increasing with the return period and the berm height. When using the flow rates to
simulate floods, similar results have been obtained for the 10 years return period and the
flooding areas are a 17% and a 30% broader with the response approach, for the 50 years and
100 years return period respectively.
