dc.description.abstract | In order to ensure the satisfactory execution of a tunnelling project, it is essential to know accurately the geological and geotechnical behaviour of the excavated terrain, as the election of the construction method (support of the excavation front, security measures, transport of material, etc.) depends on it. In mechanical tunnelling projects it is possible that, if the terrain is formed by fine grained soils (particularly by clays), some important technical difficulties appear due to the adhesion of the excavated materials at the cutting wheel or the rest of the machine components. This can lead to several problems, as a higher energy consumption (especially at EPB or earth pressure balance), blocking of excavation tools, clogging of screw or belt conveyors, etc. Together with other university departments and companies of the sector, the Chair of Geotechnical Engineering of the RWTH Aachen University carries out a research at several scales about the interfacial processes between excavated minerals and cutting tool surfaces. Within this framework, in order to quantify the adhesion of soils, it is being developed a new laboratory test named cone pull-out test. Using this test, still in trial phase, it will be established a new classification scheme to evaluate the adhesion potential of different soils. This minor thesis is part of the development process of this new test. Its main objective is to investigate the influence of the mineralogical composition of a soil in its adhesion potential. Particularly, in this work it has been tested through the cone pull-out test how the presence of different clay minerals (kaolinite, smectite, illite) affects to the adhesion potential of a soil, in order to establish which soils can cause more problems during tunnelling works. |
