The influence of total compensation on job satisfaction
González Navarro, Francesc; Selva Olid, Clara; Sunyer Torrents, Albert
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of several total compensation factors on job satisfaction. This cross-sectional and confirmatory research has collected data from a sample of 246 employees including lower-level workers, technicians and middle managers in manufacturing and service industries in Spain, mainly medium- and large-sized companies in the private sector. Data analysis includes reliability and validity tests of psychometric scales and hypotheses testing using multi-group Structural Equations Modelling (SEM). The study results show that the supervisor support, career development and work-life balance are strongly and positively related to job satisfaction. However, pay satisfaction is positively related to job satisfaction only for the group of employees who are 40 years of age or younger. It is important that managers conceptualize these factors as part of total compensation and promote policies for work flexibility, career development and supervisor support. The results add to the small literature that has investigated the growing field of total compensation and its outcomes for job satisfaction and employee performance.

Performance indicators for the evolution of areas of innovation: Porto Digital case
Rapetti, Carina; Pique Huerta, Josep Miquel; Figlioli, Aline; Berbegal Mirabent, Jasmina
Areas of Innovation (AOIs) need urban, economic, social and governance development. Building upon the theories of Triple Helix, Knowledge-Based Urban Development, Clusters of Innovation, and the evolution phases of AOIs, this study presents in a novel way, key performance indicators (KPI) that can be used to track and monitor the progress of an innovation district in distinct phases of development towards the achievement of its goals. Using the Porto Digital Case in Recife, the most awarded project in Brazil underway for 20 years at a Triple Helix hybrid organization Núcleo Gestor do PortoDigital (NGPD), performance indicators are analysed and classified. This yields further understanding of which stage of development they have become operative (from inception to maturity), which dimensions affected (namely, urban, economic, social and governance), and who (Triple Helix agents) has been involved with the major actionpower over it.

In the current educational European context (European Higher Education Area, EHEA) it is common to observe that students have difficulties when carrying out assignments that required depth and quality. This problem is exacerbated in technical degrees. It is because of this problem that the necessity of promoting innovative teaching actions appears to help students perform more complex projects that also include other aspects of the business world and entrepreneurship. The teaching innovation described in the present work, aims at provinding students with the required critical skills for the detection of problems and deficiencies when writing and analyzing a business plan. To do this so, the experience presented uses the concepts of self-assessment and peer-assessment

Smart structure is defined as structure equipped with sensors (especially continuous and composed of fiber optic), so that it is able of transmitting data of interest about its state of health (deformations, cracks, oxidation, etc.). This technology can facilitate the preventive maintenance of buildings and the management of their structural health. Therefore, a necessary aspect of interest to analyze in order to know if the technology is applicable or not, is to evaluate its profitability. Thus, the objective of this paper is to perform a cost-benefit analysis of smart structures, studying on the one hand which is the initial cost increase involved in the implementation of the proposal, and on the other hand to evaluate which is the saving of money to over the time that this application represents, what allows to establish the point of return on investment (ROI), and from which moment it is possible to expect net benefits

Education 4.0 emphasises the development of skills and competences necessary in a modern workplace. In this paper, we explored what these Education 4.0 skills look like through exploring the opinions of industry professionals in the Computer Science (CS) sector. A series of focus groups involving CS companies from across Europe were used to identify the skills required and the current gaps in training for CS graduates. The two main gaps identified by companies were graduates’ lack of soft skills and challenges to applying theoretical knowledge to different practical contexts. Strengths identified included good knowledge of programming and interacting with clients and customers on a technical level. Amongst the suggested ways for addressing these gaps were a close collaboration between industry and academia through company placements and opportunities for project-based learning in higher education.

Today’s universities are expected to simultaneously conduct teaching, research and third stream activities. These latter activities are usually materialized in the form of technology transfer activities. In a context were researchers are expected to simultaneously excel in all the tasks they perform, the scheme of incentives for the academic community is crucial. This study seeks to investigate and generate a new debate on in which activities are researchers devoting their efforts and time. In order to do so, we describe the evolution of research (publications) and technology transfer (R&D contracts and funded projects) outputs in the four technical universities of Spain. Results reveal that while revenues coming from R&D activities have notoriously diminished in the last years, the number of scientific publications has increased. These findings lead us to question whether Spanish universities are not properly aligned with industry needs, thus contradicting their raison d’être.

Higher education systems and regional economic development in Europe: a combined approach
Bertoletti, Alice; Berbegal Mirabent, Jasmina; Agasisti, Tommaso
This study deals with the analysis of regional economic development in Europe. Specifically, it examines the extent to which the performance and characteristics of higher education systems (HESs) influence regional economic development. The analysis employs data at the regional level, examining 649 NUTS-3 in 29 European countries, from 2014 to 2016. The empirical analysis, based on an original dataset that we developed, employs a novel methodological strategy that combines a traditional econometric approach with random forest. The findings detect the existence of nonlinear relationships between regional GDP per capita and HES indicators, which could have been overlooked by previous studies in the literature. Furthermore, the empirical results demonstrate the importance of comprehensively modelling the diversity of HESs, since distinct characteristics and performance can contribute differently to the economy of the regions. In particular, the most important factors for regional economic development are the size of HESs, the internationalisation of the students and research productivity. Finally, this paper provides useful insights for policymakers by suggesting new in- struments for driving and fostering the economic development of their regions.

The online teaching support platform was changed by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in 2004. Moodle, an open source software, was used in place of the prior proprietary software. The population's confinement at home owing to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 was a stress test for the whole university community, particularly those responsible for providing support for the online teaching support platform. Concerns about possible scalability challenges with the quiz functionality during the examination period arose as a result of the increased activity and the prospect of the generalization of online assessment. The solution included deploying a high-performance version of the Moodle Quiz Module As A Service (SaaS) to plug-and-play within the university's LMS without relying on internal resources using Moodle's IMS LTI interoperability features. This study aims at analyzing the solution, which included a systems strategy, private cloud operations, internal communication, and teacher training, that allowed the university course to be assessed in a confined space.
