Rakhsh Mahpour, Ali; Claramunt Blanes, Josep; Ardanuy Raso, Mònica; Rosell Amigó, Juan Ramón
The present study was designed to investigate the bond mechanism between flax nonwoven fabric reinforced lime mortars and four different types of masonry stones. The researchers carried out a comprehensive characterization of the mortars and stones, and analyzed the interface between these materials based onbondextensionandflexuralstrength.Theresultsshowedthatbondstrengthvalues were directly related to adherence extension, which was dependent on surface treatment (such as water, lime, and latex). The flexural tests conducted on stones strengthened with the flax nonwoven fabric reinforced lime composite revealed that the latex treatment showed the best performance. This study provides preliminary evidence that the use of flax nonwoven fabric reinforced lime composite maybeaneffective method for masonry strengthening. However, further research is necessary to reach a comprehensive conclusion. Further studies may include an investigation of the effects of different types of latex, the influence of curing conditions on bond strength, and the long-term performance of the strengthening system. The results of this research may have important implications for the conservation and strengthening of historic masonry structures, as well as for the design of new masonry constructions.

Towards learning architectural construction and rehabilitation using metaverse envorinments

Improving the learning process of construction and rehabilitation is one of the current teaching challenges in studies related to buildings. Most students have difficulties in understanding how construction parts - foundations, load-bearing elements, ducts and services, etc. - materialize, because they are seldomly visible in finished buildings. Current related learning resources, which present these parts using figures and explanations, are not comprehensible enough for construction and rehabilitation students, who consider site visits as crucial activities. However, visits to construction sites carry several issues: safety risks that imply specific insurances and equipment, transport of visitors, inaccessibility for visitors with reduced mobility or the limitations of only watching the site at a specific single day.
This situation can improve by increasing the digitalization of the architecture learning resources, which is favored by digital interests and skills of the current students. For instance, with the incorporation of augmented reality visits to works in a Metaverse environment that can complement existing learning activities. Although Metaverses are not common in learning processes yet, they have numerous strengths like their capacity to show complex or abstract ideas and construct immersive learning environments for education while friendly interacting with users. Most former projects work with non-real environments, created with the objective to show and work with something that does not exist and, for example, could exist in the future. Contrarily, this paper focuses on augmented reality experiences in a building that does exist and was documented during all its construction process, so that learners can experience this process at anytime and anywhere. This difference is the main novelty of this research, which differs from former learning environments using augmented reality to model non-existing or future architecture.
This research is the main result of a competitive funded research project developed at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. This paper presents the definition and application of a new method to construct and improve metaverse environments for learning new building and rehabilitation processes in studies related to architecture. This paper is part of the previously mentioned project, which expects to improve the learning process of future architects and building professionals with the incorporation to the classes of construction and rehabilitation realities in a pedagogic manner and optimizing the teaching resources. This method has been successfully developed a new environment based on augmented reality. Students can safely visit this environment using laptops, cellphones and virtual reality glasses in classrooms during lectures and practical activities, as well as outside class to review the course contents, do self-learning activities, etc. The satisfaction of the new environment is high by the educational community that has tested it. A holistic evaluation process, combining a multi-criteria decision-making method with surveys, has assessed this new learning resource. The main strengths of this new learning environment are related to its application and inclusion. The results also show some issues that future steps plan to solve by following neuroeducation theories to decrease users’ potential nuisances as well as introducing mixed reality to optimize users’ perception and learning process.

Buildings consume 42.6% of the electricity generated in Brazil, and the residential sector is responsible for 21,4% of that amount, in other words, almost a quarter of the generated electricity. Add to this fact, the housing deficit was almost 6 million in 2019 in the country. The purpose of this article is to analyze the results of the heating and cooling demand of a social residential building designed in an H shape, in Passo Fundo, in southern Brazil, from the perspective of the thermal transmittance limitation of the Brazilian normative (NBR 15575) and the Spanish Technical Code (CTE). The main objective is to verify and analyze the existing differences and potentials in the comparison between the regulations, evaluating the thermal envelope of a typical social housing building. The method used to obtain results was a computer simulation, using EnergyPlus software as an energy calculation engine and Sketchup 2017 for the modeling, with the Euclid plugin, which directly sends data to the energy simulation program. The building was simulated with climate data from the city of Passo Fundo, belonging to the Brazilian Bioclimatic Zone 2 (BZ2), and was compared to the transmittance level required for the D1 climate of Spain, as required by the CTE. Finally, it is possible to evidence that there is a decrease in the building’s energy demand as thermal insulation is incorporated into the walls and roof, to reach the strictest standard requirement levels. This article intends to show the potential for improvement in Brazilian regulations and the path to be followed concerning energy improvement in buildings.

Residential buildings have a fundamental role in the inclusion of the right to housing for families from different economic and social contexts. Concerning the performance of these buildings, the quality of the
constructions is linked mainly with the composition of their envelopes (opaque and translucent), as well as
the passive strategies architectural design. Observing the composition of the envelope, this paper aim to
identify in the literature the different considerations involving the possibility of filamentous fungi formation,
indoor air quality (IAQ), and energy consumption of these buildings. The selection process of the analyzed
papers passed a protocol of systematic literature review (SLR), a total of 304 papers were identified in the
databases investigated in this study. The main results point to a predominance of the computer simulation
method as a tool for exploring the performance variables; moreover, single-family dwellings predominate as
model of discussion. It was also observed a gap regarding a combination of analysis characteristics since
most of the identified productions considered as evaluation conditions only part of the variables necessary
for the analysis of the themes of interest of this research.
