Ayora Mexia, Marcel; Pedret Sagnier, Berta; Tudoras Miravet, Àlex
The Kuramoto-Sivanshinsky equation is studied thoroughly by numerical integration. The rst
section demonstrates the study's motivation and historical relevance. Rigorous mathematical analy-
sis is made on how to approach the equation to nd possible solutions in periodic domains. Di erent
numerical methods for integration have been studied along with their accuracy and computational
cost. Lastly, some periodic solutions are found which follow Feigenbaum's universality principle and
give a deterministic insight into the apparent chaotic behaviour

Gap Junction channels between adjacent cells are key in order to perform cell-to-cell communicative
tasks. [3] In this article, gap junction dynamics are modelled as a function of inter cellular
voltage potential, considering that connexin proteins transitions between high and low conductance
states can be explained in an stochastic form

Bidirectional Speed Estimation Using a Single Asymmetric Encoder Wheel
Planas Lisbona, Mireia; Sallés Rius, Anna; Sebastián Esandi, Naila
The aim of this project is to design an asymmetric encoder and develop an algorithm able to
estimate the angular speed and direction of rotation using a single set of slits and detectors. This
proposed algorithm will be tested using the well known frequency-based and period-based methods.
After preliminary simulations with Matlab/Simulink, the asymmetric wheel will be experimentally
tested in a real platform using a SMF32F407 microcontroller

Frequency chirp reduction in Mach-Zehnder modulators
Calero, Héctor; Guerrero, Quim
We present our study of the Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) and the transmission of pure
tone radiofrequency signals through an optical ber link. Our results show that the detected signal
at the receiver vanishes at a speci c frequency of the pure tone signal as a result of chromatic
dispersion. The frequency notch in the link's transfer function experiences a shift as a consequence
of the nite Extinction Ratio (ER) of the MZM. Here, we propose to compensate this e ect using
dual-drive modulators with a clever relationship between amplitudes of the signals in each electrode
and analyze the range of values for which the approximation of small signal regime is valid

Terminal Control Of A 2-Link Robot Manipulator
De Castro, Josep Maria; Domínguez Pla, Paula; Palau, Nil
This paper describes a comparative evaluation of different
controllers for a position regulation 2-link robot
manipulator. The equation of motion for two link robot
is a nonlinear di erential equation. The controllers,
namely two proportional plus derivative with a nonlinear
compensation and a terminal control, are designed
from the dynamic description of the two link robot and
then the controlled system is simulated by means of Matlab/
Simulink software which allows animated simulations

Boundary conditions and Rankine-Hugoniot condition in computational acoustics
Florit, Enric; Gómez, Roger
In this work we derive a procedure that permits the implementation of suitable boundary condi-
tions in the nite volume method for problems in acoustics. Afterwards, we validate the procedure
through numerical experiments by comparison with a 1D case. Finally, we illustrate the evolution
of acoustic waves in the setting of a region with two chambers separated by a wall with a small

Modelling and designing a Paul ion trap
Capellas, Samuel; Hajjar, Rafah
The present article consists in the modelling an design of a Paul ion trap using the Method of
Moments for numerical integration. Firstly, we have developed some preliminary work with simple
geometries in two and three dimensions. Then we have designed the geometry of the trap, consisting
in two hiperboloid plates which have been discretized, triangulated, and solved by the Method of
Moments. The potential in the plates has been set to vary harmonically, since sinusoidal signals
have proved to be more e ective than triangular and square signals. We have then simulated the
con nement of one, two and multiple ions, and we have studied how the chosen frequency and
potential a ect the e ectiveness of the trap

Path Integral approach to the 2D Ising model through the Worm Algorithm
Cavallar, Alberto; Simó, Enric
The aim of this article is to present a Path Integral Monte Carlo method known as the Worm
Algorithm (WA) and analyze its promising performance by studying a particular problem. For this
purpose, the well-known 2D Ising model on a square lattice with periodic boundary conditions and
without external eld is considered and its alternative path integral formulation is presented. The
WA is implemented and analyzed by comparing it with the classical Metropolis algorithm, which is
known to show slowing-down near the critical temperature
