Ramírez Córcoles, Yolanda
Purpose: The increasing social concern about establishing procedures of accountability and ensuring information transparency in public universities prompted us to raise the need to disclose information on their intellectual capital.
Design/methodology/approach: In this study we developed a questionnaire which was sent to members of the Social Councils of Spanish public universities, in order to identify which intangible elements university stakeholders demand most.
Findings: The results of this research demonstrate how important it is for Spanish public universities to provide information on their intellectual capital in order to satisfy their stakedolders’ information needs.
Practical implications: The results of this research lead us to recommend that universities include in their accounting statements the information on intellectual capital demanded by the different stakeholders.
Originality/value: No previous research was conducted for Spanish universities. Our results represent a starting point for public universities to identify which is the most requested information about intellectual capital.

The aim of this research is to deepen the knowledge about luxury consumption from the paradigm of symbolic consumption through a holistic and multidimensional vision, allowing us to see and understand the perceptions of university consumers.
Design/methodology: A literature review of the construct of a luxury brand is performed as part of the theoretical framework, before a descriptive and quantitative empirical study is done, based on university students completing a questionnaire. The aim is to understand their perception about the attributes situating a mark in the luxury segment.
Findings: The results of this study contribute to the existing literature on luxury, thus providing a fuller and deeper understanding of the concept. The empirical study conducted with university students provides an idea of their perceptions about the nature of a luxury brand.
Research limitations: The socio-cultural and demographic properties of the sample limit the research results to the accessible or new luxury category, and cannot be generalised for the whole sector or for other segments.
Practical implications: The knowledge of the perception of luxury of consumers is critical for optimising the strategic management of such brands. The results provide guidance for the design of communication and marketing strategies aimed at the university public, and provide the most relevant features or parameters of luxury for this consumer segment.
Social implications: The design of a marketing and communication strategy for a brand involves a thorough understanding of its consumers. Knowing the perceptions of social groups within different market segments is the first step towards an effective stimulation of their purchasing motivations.
Originality/Added value: While the luxury sector is particularly attractive for professionals and researchers, in Spain there have been no empirical studies of consumers to extract a strategic value of the conclusions for these brands.

Design/methodology/approach: Are carried out two case studies in two innovative schools, following the model of qualitative research, performing participant observation, interviews, and discussions with the individuals involved.
Findings and Originality/value: discusses four practices to approach school and community: the Tutorial Action, the Opening of the Centre to the community, the implementation of interactive groups and the creation of a Commission of families.
Research limitations/implications: The results are not representative of what happens in the common schools. Practical implications: each centre should explore their own possibilities and limits to encourage the school-community relationship betting on the maximum of collaborative organizational forms among the different agents, to provide joint responses to today's educational challenges.
Social implications: the entire educational community should be well received in centers to contribute to school improvement of students and there is a real community involvement.
Originality/value: when a strong synergy is been generating between all components of the educational community all members of the community can bring answers to the educational challenges of the moment, in a horizontal plane.

Marin-Garcia, Juan A.; Conci, Graziela
Valor añadido: Extendemos la investigación precedente comprobando el modelo reflectivo factorial de segundo orden usado en multitud de estudios previos sin haber sido informada su validación.; Purpose: This article examines the construct definition and validation of appropriate scales to measure the degree of display of the high involvement work practices. The ultimate goal is to propose a measurement model of high involvement practices to ensure the configurational invariance of the three samples and pass the tests of convergent and discriminant validity.
Design/methodology/approach: Using a confirmatory factor model with data from Spain (N1 = 105) and United States (N2 = 212, N3 = 145), checking whether the grouping of items in the categories proposed in the theoretical models fit the data set.
Findings and Originality/value: It is found that a single construct that groups all high involvement practices is not an appropriate model and the model scales reflective communication and training and have passed the tests for validation, while the participation and rewards scales have not been able be validated from a reflective point of view and perhaps should be treated as a formative model.
Originality/value: We extend previous research by checking the reflective second order factor model used in many previous studies without being informed the validation.

D'Alauro, Gabriele
Purpose: This paper aims at examining the quality of corporate disclosure about goodwill impairment and its relationship with goodwill write-offs and earnings performance, exploiting an accounting regulation that allows significant unverifiable estimates whilst requires a high level of information.
Design/methodology/approach: This study, based on a sample of Italian and British firms with market indications of goodwill impairment, verifies through a both univariate and multivariate analysis whether the level of disclosure is positively related to the magnitude of goodwill write-off and to earnings performance, using a self-constructed score of mandatory disclosure about goodwill impairment tests in accordance with IAS 36 requirements.
Findings: In a general context of insufficient information, we find that for Italian firms both the magnitude of goodwill write-offs and earnings performance are significantly and positively associated to the level of mandatory disclosure about goodwill impairment tests. For the British firms, as companies more used to impairment test rules, the data does not confirm any significant association.
Research limitations/implications: The objective of this study is to test the initial impact of IAS 36 in the first years of its application, selecting a sample of firms belonging to limited but significant activity sectors. Future research could usefully analyse a wider sample of firms, also extending the time period of analysis. In any case, the findings of our study are consistent with the insights of earnings management theory, suggesting that the subjectivity inherent in impairment test assumptions could be used opportunistically by managers.
Originality/value: This research investigates questions still relatively unexplored, concerning the effects of goodwill write-offs and accounting performance on corporate disclosure about goodwill impairment test. Based on this analysis, the study shows that corporate disclosure could be a “litmus paper” able to test the degree of good faith with which each firm has implemented IAS 36 requirements

There is an extensive literature which associates organizational learning with creation of knowledge, but models that relate organizational learning constructs and learning organization with the creation of knowledge are not found. The aim of this paper is to present a model of creation and knowledge transfer are based learning in organizations.
Design / methodology / approach: This paper provides a critical review on approaches that address knowledge creation: Nonaka’ theory that explain the creation of knowledge based on the SECI model and the set of proposals that indicate the origin of knowledge and learning
Findings and Originality/ value: This paper presents a model of creation and transfer knowledge in organizations through constructivist learning principles.
Originality / value: This work explores Nonaka’ theories and literature on learning in organizations to integrate both approaches in the study of knowledge creation

Purpose: The paper provides a comprehensive and up-to-date literature review of customer value concepts and distinguishes complex customer value from the various perspectives. It structures the themes and dimensions between the various approaches along the customer value main lines in the literature.
Design/methodology/approach: The paper reviews current literature and illustrates different types of value representations through a case example.
Findings: Based on a comprehensive literature review, a framework how to scholars can structure customer value constructs is presented.
Originality/value: In business and management research a conceptual confusion prevails and this paper attempts to clarify different types of customer value to provide a better resolution tool for scholars.

Sánchez-Sellero, Mª Carmen; Sánchez-Sellero, Pedro
La forma de construir la variable “Ingresos del hogar corregidos” es novedosa.; Purpose: We study the effects of personal features in the Galician labour market, as both self-employed people and employees who work for a firm.
Design/methodology/approach: We propose a wage model to estimate the probability of a person in working age being employee who works for a firm. After the model parameter estimation through binary logistic regression, we estimate the conditional probability to be an employee who works for a firm for different personal features. We do this to evaluate the real effect of personal features in the person role in the labour market, as employee who works for a firm or self-employed person.
Findings and originality/value: The probability to be an employee who works for a firm depends on the gender. The greater age, the lower is the probability of men and women that they will be employees who work for a firm. The probability of men to work for a firm is the same to all family size, whereas this probability for women is lower if the family size gests bigger. The greater corrected family income, the lower is the probability of men and women to work for a firm, but the percentages are different.
Research limitations/implications: This paper has been made during a moment of sustained economic growth. So, future researches could study the effect of the economic cycle in this topic.
Practical implications: The gender differences affects to the labour market.
Originality/value: This study considers as the most important variable the gender, and the effect of other explanatory variables on the different probabilities to be an employee who works for a firm change depending on the gender. We propose a new way to create the variable "corrected household income".
