Abstract

The transition of energy from fossil fuels to renewables has been winning importance in the last years due to environmental issues such as climate change. The transportation sector has contributed to that transition by entering the market of electromobility, which is still far from being the dominant technology. To achieve the goal of sustainable growth, different experts, Governments and lobbies have been continuously exposing their ideas. However, it does not exist yet a prescription of how countries could achieve their emission reduction plans, without having collateral side effects. For that reason, I do a research work analyzing and critically evaluating the guidelines of the energy transition plans of Germany with focus on the following research question: “Can the German Energiewende plans satisfy the future electricity needs that will arise as a consequence of the intensification of the electromobility in the transportation sector?” The literature review conducted includes data from different sources including official communication channels of the German Government and expert statements. Thus, it takes into consideration all critical approaches to this topic which creates a holistic picture of the situation. I then performed a scenario analysis, the results of which show that there are different future situations of energy composition in Germany possible. On the one hand, depending on the scenario analyzed and on the other, on the forecast for the transportation sector chosen. They raise serious doubts about the direction that Germany is taking with regard to the restructuring of the energy mix. It highlights the threat of eliminating the most reliable sources whereas focusing on the worst reliable sources. Moreover, the variability introduced by the latter shows that Germany will most likely need to strengthen the energy exchanges with the neighbor countries in order to satisfy its demand. This Master Thesis contributes to the literature as a preliminary study of the resources landscape of Germany in the past and in the present. Besides, it presents different possible outcomes of what, according to the current data and regulations, can take place in a short term.
