Abstract
Airport baggage handling is a key component of airport ground operations, as it directly influences aircraft turnaround time and overall operational efficiency. Increasing air traffic and the growing demand for shorter turnaround times have highlighted the limitations of conventional baggage transport systems, which rely on manually operated vehicles and are subject to operational variability. As a result, airport automation has emerged as a promising approach to improve the reliability and efficiency of baggage handling processes. This Final Degree Thesis investigates the application of an Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR)-based baggage transport system operating between the Baggage Handling System (BHS) and aircraft stands. To analyse the feasibility of the proposed concept, a discrete-event simulation model was developed using SIMIO. The model reproduces the baggage transport process under different airport traffic scenarios and compares conventional human-based operations with an automated transport configuration. The thesis describes the baggage handling process, reviews current automation technologies applied to airport operations, presents the assumptions and implementation of the simulation model, and analyses the performance of the proposed system through different operational scenarios. The study provides a simulation-based framework for evaluating autonomous baggage transport systems and supports the analysis of their potential application in future airport ground handling operations.
