El casco antiguo de Barcelona cuenta con un sistema comercial resultado de muchos siglos de evolución. La relación del sistema con su estructura urbana y el tipo de calle que le da soporte es profunda y ha dado lugar a áreas de concentración comercial muy intensas con un altísimo grado de especialización. Los nuevos modelos comerciales importados y la tematización turística sobre el tejido urbano tradicional han expulsado el comercio de proximidad, están transformando un paisaje urbano histórico y han modificado el precario equilibrio funcional del ámbito. ¿Es posible vivir con normalidad en el casco antiguo?

A largely and historically extended commercial system is a characteristic of Barcelona’s historic center. The persistent and profound relationship between the system, urban structure, and its streets nature, had led to the formation of an intense commercial concentration along high levels of specialization. The new imported retail models and the “touristification” of traditional urban displaced the local commerce, modifying among others, the historical urban landscapes and its problematic functional balance. Is it possible to perform our usual daily routines in the old town?
