Abstract
The project aims to study and evaluate algorithmic techniques for graph drawing and the physical synthesis of circuits. Both problems are tightly related since they try to find good locations for the nodes of a graph that reduce the total edge length. The techniques will be based on the spectral theory of graphs and mathematical optimization. In the first part, we intend to obtain an understandable drawing for graphs that present some regularity, even if those graphs have distorting edges. Spectral drawing is a technique to draw graphs based on the eigenvectors of the Laplacian matrix of the graph. This technique performs very well on graphs that present a regularity, such as grids, but it performs poorly when some edges break this regularity. Given a regular graph with some distorting edges, we intend to identify those edges and compute the spectral drawing without considering them. To identify those edges, we have developed a machine learning model that classifies all edges of a graph as regular edges or distorting edges. The thesis's second part focuses on circuit placement. As a circuit can be interpreted as a graph, the first part of the placement algorithm will compute its spectral drawing, rotate it to map the region where the circuit has to be placed, and then, using mathematical optimization, find legal positions for each component of the circuit.
