Les cités du théâtre. Des acteurs de rénovation urbaine et des "espaces autres"

Abstract

Idea, concepto, el término «Ciudad del Teatro» es una invención del director de teatro italiano Giorgio Strehler. Acuñar una denominación es una manera de dar cuerpo a una idea, y no cabe ninguna duda que Strehler era consciente de ello. El artículo describe una genealogía que arrancaría, antes de la Città del Teatro de Milán, en el Lincoln Center de Nueva York, y tendría hitos en la Ciutat del Teatre en Barcelona y la Catoucherie en Paris. El recorrido por estas cuatro ciudades del teatro es el punto de partida para reflexionar acerca del concepto, de su definición y acepciones; poner de relieve los rasgos comunes en la forma urbana de los casos estudiados; y finalmente, discurrir acerca de la relación de la Ciudad del Teatro con la ciudad realmente existente, revelando su voluntad de actuar como agente de renovación urbana y/o su caracterización como ciudad otra.

The expression "City of Theatre" is an idea, a concept, created by the Italian theatre director Giorgio Strehler. Coining a term is a way of providing substance to a concrete idea, and there is no doubt that Strehler was aware of it. The article analyzes three other "cités du théâtre": the Lincoln Center of New York, La Ciutat del Teatre in Barcelona and La Cartoucherie in Paris. The differences and common features of these four cases allow us to reflect on the concept of "City of Theatre", its definition and meanings. Moreover, the article relates an idea of theater -an artistic will- with architecture and the theatrical place, and it notes the features common to the urban form of the cases of study. Finally, the main purpose of the article is to question the relationship of the theater with the existing city and reveal to what extent it acts as an agent of urban renewal or aspires to position itself as another city
