| dc.description.abstract | The architectural production of the North- American architect Myron Goldsmith is essentially based on a double roll career: architect and engineer. These attributes guarantee to his architecture a high quality level on its aesthetic and construction values reaching the highest artistic expression allied to a sophisticated construction techniques. His career began with the German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, his teacher and later his boss in the 40’s and 50’s whose relationship had a large influence remained until the end of his career. However, just as happened with Mies, the period of study in Europe with the Italian architect Pier Luigi Nervi also has influenced so much as a structural designer. These two relationships were kept as his two main architectural references. Nevertheless, the works signed by his own only emerged when he worked for the multinational firm S.O.M. - Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. During this period, because his great architectural skills in special because his structural conceptions, he has reached its professional maturity and the recognition as one of the leading architects of his generation. The main building site for The Republic Newspaper Plant and Offices - 1971 is a great example of these ideas. The building is a precise fusion between a complex functional system and a simple structure extremely slim and refined. In other words, a a clear and precise conception of a structural system, which defines the basic module that is repeated, generating order patterns among all elements of the project, are they concrete or abstract. Such attributes are the matrix of the economy of means and methods adopted, whose relationships with the precision in the execution generate the visual and formal consistency of the building, undoubtedly reaching a clear tectonicity. This following work, as it goes, presents such relationships and ideas, mainly by manipulating the original architectural drawings from the Columbus Architectural Archive, as to do so, validates the analysis developed and represent a contribution to the reflection of the modernism values. |
