Abstract
This report aims to summarize the different steps carried out to design, implement and test an optimized version of the Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system for evaluating the turbine model test rig condition and performance during steady and transient operation conditions located at the Vattenfall R&D facility in Älvkarleby (Sweden). Additionally, a description of the results obtained are presented and they are analyzed based on the different measurement campaigns carried out with the Porjus U9 reduced scale Kaplan turbine runner. The document comprises a section outlining the condition monitoring approach used in the measuring campaigns, where the set-up in terms of types and positions of the physical variables measured have been optimized to end up computing the final reliable indicators. These indicators will be used to feed the controller that actuates with the appropriate active flow control techniques. The SHM is implemented in the turbine model in real-time using a CompactRIO (cRIO) hardware, where all the physical variables are measured using different sensors connected to their corresponding acquisition modules. Moreover, this SHM permits to visualize the temporal evolution of the signals and to analyze them in real time by computing the signal frequency content and updating the levels of the computed indicators to track their trends. Moreover, the SHM system has been used to evaluate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed IPM and ICM systems, and of the controller implemented on the model test rig to reduce the induced vibrations by the Rotating Vortex Rope (RVR) and the stochastic flow phenomena for a series of different off-design steady and transient operating conditions such as ramping of load
