Abstract

The development of unmanned aerial system (UAS) technology has triggered the adoption of this versatile tool in many industries. In fields such as agriculture and cinematography, its use is already significantly extended thanks to many benefits and the increased availability of this technology. This is also the case for the private security industry, where, although the adoption is still in an earlier phase, using aerial vehicles to complement the habitual tasks yields significant added value. However, the process that has to be carried out to include this technology in the habitual business activities is large and complex. From dealing with different administrative entities to purchasing the necessary equipment, this also implies personnel familiarization with common aeronautical terms and setting operational procedures to follow during the flights. As one might imagine, this is not easy when it comes to companies without this type of knowledge. It has been found that there is a lack of material destined to guiding companies in this process. For this reason, this work aims to discuss the most relevant aspects and how do they affect businesses trying to adopt this technology. Moreover, the work seeks to offer a solution to the most common issues emerging during the process. In order to develop a systematic approach to the adoption of UAS, tools such as a Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methodology or decision diagrams have been used to synthesize the complexities of this field. In the end, this work lays out a comprehensive guide to get familiar with the relevant aspects any company within the private security industry should tackle before establishing a UAS dedicated unit.
