This deliverable focuses on the proling activities developed in the project with the partner's applications. To perform this proling activities, a couple of benchmarks were dened in collaboration with WP5. The rst benchmark is an embarrassingly parallel benchmark that performs a read and then multiple writes of the same object, with the objective of stressing the memory and storage systems and evaluate the overhead when these reads and writes are performed in parallel. A second benchmark is dened based on the Continuation Multi Level Monte Carlo (C-MLMC) algorithm. While this algorithm is normally executed using multiple levels, for the proling and performance analysis objectives, the execution of a single level was enough since the forthcoming levels have similar performance characteristics. Additionally, while the simulation tasks can be executed as parallel (multi-threaded tasks), in the benchmark, single threaded tasks were executed to increase the number of simulations to be scheduled and stress the scheduling engines. A set of experiments based on these two benchmarks have been executed in the MareNostrum 4 supercomputer and using PyCOMPSs as underlying programming model and dynamic scheduler of the tasks involved in the executions. While the rst benchmark was executed several times in a single iteration, the second benchmark was executed in an iterative manner, with cycles of 1) Execution and trace generation; 2) Performance analysis; 3) Improvements. This had enabled to perform several improvements in the benchmark and in the scheduler of PyCOMPSs. The initial iterations focused on the C-MLMC structure itself, performing re-factors of the code to remove ne grain and sequential tasks and merging them in larger granularity tasks. The next iterations focused on improving the PyCOMPSs scheduler, removing existent bottlenecks and increasing its performance by making the scheduler a multithreaded engine. While the results can still be improved, we are satised with the results since the granularity of the simulations run in this evaluation step are much ner than the one that will be used for the real scenarios. The deliverable nishes with some recommendations that should be followed along the project in order to obtain good performance in the execution of the project codes.

Research report R966
The report derives an equation for the shift of the effective centroid that occurs in plain channel section columns as a result of local buckling. The shift causes bending when the column is compressed between pinned ends and may need to be accounted for in design. The equation is based on Stowell’s work on simply supported plate elements with a free longitudinal edge. It is shown to be in reasonable agreement with eccentricities calculated using results of geometric nonlinear shell finite element analyses of plain channel columns. It is also shown to provide more accurate values of eccentricity than the effective width method, in which the effective width of each plate element is calculated to produce an effective cross-section and an associated effective centroid.

Type of production: technical report (JUQUEEN Extreme Scaling Workshop, Juelich Supercomputing Center, Germany, 2015). Format: contributed chapter.
In conjunction with this year's JUQUEEN Porting and Tuning Workshop, which is part of the PRACE Advanced Training Centres curriculum, JSC continued its series of BlueGene Extreme Scaling Workshops. Seven application teams were invited to stay for two days and work on the scalability of their codes, with dedicated access to the entire JUQUEEN system for a period of 30 hours. Most of the teams' codes had thematic overlap with JSC Simulation Laboratories or were part of an ongoing collaboration with one of the SimLabs. The code teams came from the fields of climate science (ICON from DKRZ, and MPAS-A from KIT and NCAR), engineering (FEMPAR from UPC, and ex_nl/FE^2 from Uni Cologne and TU Freiberg), fluid dynamics (psOpen and SHOCK both from RWTH Aachen), and neuroscience (CoreNeuron from the EPFL Blue Brain Project) and were supported by JSC SimLabs and Cross-sectional teams, with IBM and JUQUEEN technical support. Within the first 24 hours of dedicated access to the entire 28 racks, all seven teams had adapted their codes and datasets to exploit the massive parallelism and restricted node memory for successful executions using all 458,752 cores. Most of them also demonstrated excellent strong or weak scalability, qualifying all but one for the High-Q Club. A total of 370 'large' jobs were executed using 12 of the 15 million core-hours of compute time allocated for the workshop. Detailed results for each code, provided by the application teams themselves, is introduced by analysis comparing them to the other 16 High-Q Club codes.

We present a variational formulation of the finite calculus (FIC) equations for problems in mechanics governed by differential equations with symmetric operators. Applications considered include solid mechanics, diffusion-transport and diffusion-reaction problems. The key of the variational formulation is the identification of the FIC governing equations with the classical differential equations of mechanics written in terms of modified non-local variables. A total potential energy (TPE) functional is found in terms of the modified variables. The FIC equations in the domain and the boundary are recovered as the Euler-Lagrange equations and the natural boundary condition of the TPE functional, respectively. Symmetric finite element equations are obtained after discretization of the TPE functional, therefore preserving the symmetry of the governing infinitesimal equations. The variational FIC expression is reinterpreted as a Petrov Galerkin weighted residual form of the original FIC equations with non-local weighting functions. The analogy of the variational FIC-FEM formulation with a discontinuous Galerkin method is recognized. Extensions to multidimensional linear elastostatics and diffusion-reaction problems are presented.

The concrete shrinkage is a common effect of the concrete material behavior during concrete strengthening. The shrinkage is usually a function of the particular concrete material features, its quality, curing process, structural element size, and thermal-hydraulic boundary conditions during the working stress life-time conditions. Typically, grid-geometry steel bars with reinforcement function (rebar) are placed close to the concrete contour surface (coating spacing) to avoid the undesired shrinkage cracks with consequent material section loss. In addition to the solution through classical steel-grid rebar, there are other alternatives considering new materials and methodologies during concrete casting which are still under development (as the use of master fibers is) and may be also appropriate to avoid concrete shrinkage cracking with reducing material and installation costs.

Strategic overview series of the International Association of Hydrogeologists-IAH. This Series is designed both to inform professionals in other sectors of key interactions with groundwater resources and hydrogeological science, and to guide IAH members in their outreach to related sectors.
The naturally high microbiological and chemical quality of groundwater, captured at springheads and in shallow galleries and dugwells, has been vital for human survival, wellbeing and development from our earliest history – and remains so today. The purity of groundwater, coupled with its mineral content, is such that many springs historically have been attributed medicinal value.

This document corresponding to deliverable DEL01 “DRT service requirements and KPIs’’ is produced in the context of Task A2102, Requirements and Methodology. The document has been developed by CERTH with the collaboration of FACTUAL, AMB, CARRIS, SANT CUGAT and TheTa and its main goal is to identify the main requirements for designing and operating DRT services, and develop the associated KPIs.
As a part of MultiDEPART project, a series of surveys to key stakeholders have been done and analysed in order to obtain further information on typologies of DRT services and their acceptance. In the first part of the document the results of the surveys are presented through graphic representation. The results of the survey were also presented in a workshop held on the 28th of June with the participation of related stakeholders. The KPIs collected for both the transport operators/technology providers and the users are also presented.
In the second part of the document the technical requirements for the planning and operation of DRT services are described in details. The technical requirements are related with the main categories of the users and the system administrators and are grouped into functional and non-functional requirements. The functional requirements define a specific behavior or functions while non-functional requirements specify criteria that can be used to describe or measure the performance of the system.
The conclusions and lessons learnt are critical points for the project’s progress since they will contribute to the development of the planning and operational monitoring in A2103 ‘’ DRT Planning tools’’ and A2104 ‘’ DRT Operational Monitoring Tools’’ respectively ensuring the success implementation of these tools.

The purpose of this document is to describe the procedure carried out for the design of the Windcrete mooring system anchoring to the floating platform. The scope of this design is limited to site B of COREWIND project (Canary Islands) and includes ULS, SLS and FLS analysis. The design is based on the DNVGL standards, particularly DNVGL-ST-0119 which incorporates specific requirements for floating wind platforms. Additionally, requirements from Eurocodes EN-1992: Design of concrete structures and EN-1993: Design of steel structures were considered for the design in accordance with recommendations from DNVGL-ST-0126 . The focus of the task is kept on the design of the steel anchor plate to which the fairlead is welded, the anchor of this element to the concrete platform, as well as the load transfer to the platform. This is a critical point of the structure given the fact that mooring lines may impose concentrated loads of considerable magnitude, which could eventually compromise watertightness and floatability of the platform, and thus the integrity of the structure. This task was carried out with the aim to ensure an adequate behavior of the anchor plate under design conditions in order to maintain the global integrity of the platform. The fairlead itself is out of the scope of the task.

A stabilized finite element formulation for incompressible viscous flows is derived. The starting point are the modified Navier-Stokes equations incorporating naturally the necessary stabilization terms via a finite increment calculus (FIC) procedure. Application of the standard finite element Galerkin method to the modified differential equations leads to a stabilized discrete system of equations overcoming the numerical instabilities emanating from the advective terms and those due to the lack of compatibility between approximate velocity and pressure fields. The FIC method also provides a natural explanation for the stabilization terms appearing in all equations for both the Navier-Stokes and the simpler Stokes equations. Transient solution schemes with enhanced stabilization properties are also proposed. Finally a procedure for computing the stabilization parameters is presented.

Document intern presentat al European Convention for Constructional Steelwork. Technical Committee TC8. Stability.
This document presents an integration of measurement-to-design procedures related to structural analysis of tubular frames. TLS-based data-gathering and the automated transformation of the corresponding point clouds to as-built realistic BIM representations of the steel structures were performed. The measurement corresponds to an experimental program on four stainless steel frames. Point-cloud data was gathered during several test stages, including the unloaded case. Subsequently, a set of mathematical processing of the results is performed for the sake of generating realistic wire models. The automatic generation of these structures is developed within algorithmic modelling environments. The imperfection patterns are identified, processed and analyzed using comparison benchmarks.

We present some developments in the Particle Finite Element Method (PFEM) for analysis of coupled problems in mechanics involving fluid-soil-structure interaction (FSSI). The PFEM uses an updated Lagrangian description to model the motion of material points in both the fluid and the solid domains (the later including soil/rocks and structures). A mesh connects the particles (nodes) defining the discretized domain where the governing equations for each of the constituent materials are solved as in the standard FEM. The procedure to model frictional contact conditions and material erosion at fluid-solid and solid-solid interfaces is described. We present several examples of application of the PFEM to solve FSSI problems such as the motion of rocks by water streams, the erosion of river beds, the stability of breakwaters and constructions under sea waves, the falling of landslides on houses and into a reservoir and the failure of rockfill dams in overspill situations.

When people talks about research, development and technology transfer (RTD in short) and commercial industrial activities, it is quite usual to mix up objectives, resources and responsibilities. There is a growing opinion, spread by some public administrators and the media, that research groups at universities and RTD centers must be "profitable". In few words, many persons would wish that research is funded with competitive funds or even loans (either public or private) and that the outcomes of the research get into the market rapidly, so that the profits from marketing the corresponding products will allow research groups to be financially self-sustaining. It is also usually argued that companies should increase their research activity and invest more resources in finding new discoveries. The humoristic limit of this situation is pretending that companies will produce Nobel laureates and that a research group would be among the 10 first positions in the ranking of economic organizations in a country. Certainly, both these situations are not impossible, although they are highly improbable. The opposite case is, unfortunately, more frequent, ie. that researchers compelled by their needs to guarantee the financial survival of their groups, abandon or considerably reduce their fundamental research activities, and that companies, confusing what is a Technical Department with an Innovation Department, consider themselves self-sufficient and underestimate or ignore the contact with the real RTD world.

This paper shows applications of a recently developed thin shell element adequate for the analysis of membrane and inflatable structures. The element is a three node triangle with only translational degrees of freedom that uses the configuration of the three adjacent elements to evaluate the strains in terms of the nodal displacements only. This allows to compute (constant) bending strains and (linear) membrane strains using a total Lagrangian formulation. Several examples, including inflation and deflation of membranes and some practical applications to the analysis, design and construction of membrane structures formed by low pressure inflatable tubes are presented.

This deliverable presents a report on the developed actions and results concerning Digital-Twin-enabled multi-physics simulations and model matching. Enabling meaningful simulations within new human-infrastructure interfaces such as Digital twins is paramount. Accessing the power of simulation opens manifold new ways for observation, understanding, analysis and prediction of numerous scenarios to which the asset may be faced. As a result, managers can access countless ways of acquiring synthetic data for eventually taking better, more informed decisions. The tool MatchFEM is conceived as a fundamental part of this endeavour. From a broad perspective, the tool is aimed at contextualizing information between multi-physics simulations and vaster information constructs such as digital twins. 3D geometries, measurements, simulations, and asset management coexist in such information constructs. This report provides guidance for the generation of comprehensive adequate initial conditions of the assets to be used during their life span using a DT basis. From a more specific focus, this deliverable presents a set of exemplary recommendations for the development of DT-enabled load tests of assets in the form of a white paper. The deliverable also belongs to a vaster suit of documents encountered in WP5 of the Ashvin project in which measurements, models and assessments are described thoroughly.

Deliverable D6.1 of project ASHVIN (Assistants for Healthy, Safe, and Productive Virtual Construction Design, Operation & Maintenance using a Digital Twin Project Acronym)
ASHVIN aims at the digitalization of the construction industry to increase productivity, resource efficiency, and safety. Towards this goal, digital twin technology is only one means to an end. Therefore, the core of all ASHVIN development aims at introducing two major process innovations enabled by the possibility to closely match as-build information with as-designed information throughout the product development lifecycle that is made possible by digital twin technology. This report presents a plan for implementation of the ASHVIN platform and tools in the demonstration projects. For each of the demonstration project relevant challenges and needs are described, based on that appropriate tools and monitoring devices can be planned. It is significant to show that various type of structures (buildings, bridges, and industrial buildings) has different problems and boundary condition. Only after examination and understanding of the problems and challenges that each construction site faces it is possible to correctly apply new solution. The document that presents the implementation of digital twin technologies on demonstration projects: #1 Bridges for highspeed railways in Spain, #2 Building renovation in Poland, #3 Airport runway in Croatia, #4 Logistics hall construction in Germany, #5 Kineum office building in Sweden, #6 Office buildings in Spain, #7 Bridges in highway network in Spain, #8 Footbridge in Germany, #9 Sport stadium roof structure, #10 Quay wall in the Netherlands.

Within the framework of the GTS-LCS project (Grimsel Test Site – Long-Term Cement Studies), an in-situ experiment lasting about 5 years was started in 2009 to study water-cement-rock interactions in fractured granite. A solid cement source (OPC) was installed in a borehole intersecting a water conducting fracture. Two other boreholes at about 0.56 m (observation) and 1.12 m (extraction) from the emplacement borehole were used to monitor the evolution of water composition in the fracture. Prior to the experiment, a tracer test was performed to characterize the initial flow and transport properties of the rock around the experimental boreholes. The flow and reactive transport calculations have been performed using the Retraso-CodeBright code. Solute transport is assumed to be controlled by diffusion in the cement and by advection-dispersion in the rock fracture.
Initially, the flow model calculated from the results of the pre-emplacement tracer test, assuming a homogeneous fracture, was used to model reactive transport after emplacement of the cement. Since the small grid size from the flow model led to excessive computational times, the domain was divided into (a) a 1D radial model for the emplacement borehole and a small volume of rock around it, and (b) a 2D model for the rest of the domain. The results from (a) were used as input for (b).
The model results show dissolution of portlandite and C-S-H in a thin (mm) external layer of the cement (emplacement borehole). In the rock fracture there is dissolution of the primary silicates (except phlogopite) and precipitation of C-S-H, C-A-S-H and calcite. Fracture porosity is reduced in a belt around the 3 boreholes, converging at the extraction borehole (due to the magnitude of the extraction flow rate). The decrease in porosity, due mainly to the precipitation of calcite, is stronger right next to the extraction borehole, due to the more favorable mixing conditions between Grimsel groundwater and cement porewater. The changing water injection rate conditions in the emplacement borehole lead to changes in the flow field and in the position of the mineral reaction fronts.

In this report, we study the use of Multi-Level Monte Carlo (MLMC) methods for time dependent problems. It was found that the usability of MLMC methods depends strongly on whether or not the underlying time dependent problem is chaotic in nature. Numerical experiments are conducted on both simple problems, as well as fluid flow problems of practical interest to the ExaQUte project, to demonstrate this. For the non-chaotic cases, the hypotheses that enable the use of MLMC methods were found to be satisfied. For the chaotic cases, especially the case of high Reynolds’ number fluid flow, the hypotheses were not satisfied. However, it was found that correlations between the different levels were high enough to merit the use of multi-fidelity or control-variate approaches. It was also noted that MLMC methods could work for chaotic problems if the time window of analysis were chosen to be small enough. Future studies are proposed to examine this possibility.

This deliverable D5.3 is the final report of the activities within WP5 led by UPC, from September 2016 to July 2018.
The European bioenergy sector requires a wide promotion for strong investments in regional sustainable supply chain solutions. SMEs are central in the value chain in local bioenergy markets, as they are operating throughout all the stages of bioenergy mobilisation, from forestry management to energy plants or even energy commercialisation to final consumers. One of the major barriers that SMEs face when assessing potential bioenergy operations is the difficulty to access adequate financing; WP5 within project SECURECHAIN aims to analyse such difficulties and contribute to overcome them. The specific objectives of WP5 are:
• O5.1 Carry out targeted market feasibility surveys, pre-checks and develop a risk assessment tool to support the implementation of priority SSCM pilot projects
• O5.2 Mentor companies’ capital call strategies tailored to investor types and upgrade corporate finance disclosing in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)
• O5.3 Foster lobbying actions and dialogue between financial players and bioenergy market actors to promote the portfolio of investment proposals
This deliverable D5.3 is the final report of the activities within WP5, mainly about period 2 from September 2016 to July 2018. The market pre-check (T5.1) was carried out in phase 1 and reported in deliverable D5.1. The risk assessment analysis (T5.2) performed, the continuous financial mentoring (T5.3) being worked out with the SME business projects, and the roadshows (T5.4) that have been attended, as well as planning activities that were performed during the final year of the project, are documented in this report.

A neural network noise prediction model for a turbulent boundary layer noise mechanism has been created using a feed forward multilayer perceptron and a noise spectrum database collected from a family of NACA 0012 areofoils. The results of the neural network model were compared against the Brooks model and it was found that the quality of the prediction was improved was improved over the entire range of the data. The model was also validated against experimental data not utilized the training of the neural, with positive results.

A local damage constitutive model based on Kachanov’s theory is used within a finite element frame and applied to the case of 2D and 3D Timoshenko beam elements. The model takes into account viscous effects, thus allowing damping to be considered in a rigorous way. A damage index based on potential energy criteria, useful in evaluating the behaviour of structures or of parts of structures, is proposed. The procedure is applied to estimate the damage produced by seismic actions in reinforced concrete building structures, whose response is computed by using a non-linear Newmark-type incremental time integration scheme. Three numerical examples are included; one of them compares results obtained by using the proposed model with results of a laboratory test.

Departament d'Enginyeria Civil i Ambiental

This document presents a simple and ecient strategy for adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) and a posteriori error estimation for the transient incompressible Navier{Stokes equations. This strategy is informed by the work of Prudhomme and Oden [22, 23] as well as modern goal-oriented methods such as [5]. The methods described in this document have been implemented in the Kratos Multiphysics software and uploaded to https://zenodo.org [27].1 This document includes: A review of the state-of-the-art in solution-oriented and goal-oriented AMR. The description of a 2D benchmark model problem of immediate relevance to the objectives of the ExaQUte project. The definition and a brief mathematical summary of the error estimator(s). The results obtained. A description of the API.

The corrosion of reinforcing steel in concrete is the leading cause of deterioration for reinforced concrete structures, especially bridges exposed to external chlorides. Practitioners and researchers have evaluated and implemented various technologies to combat this problem, including the use of high-performance concrete, chemical corrosion inhibitors, sealers and barriers, and alternative reinforcement. This synthesis project addressed the latter, specifically the use of alternative reinforcement (e.g., fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcement, epoxy-coated steel, stainless steel, galvanized steel, etc.) to extend the service life of bridge structures subjected to external chlorides from marine environments or from de-icing salt applications. The primary goals of this project were to (a) review and synthesize published literature, (b) review and synthesize current DOT practice, (c) identify gaps in our current knowledge and state of practice, and (d) provide guidance, based on current knowledge, on how to evaluate and select alternative reinforcement for bridges subjected to external chlorides.

In this paper, numerical differentiation is applied to integrate plastic constitutive
laws and to compute the corresponding consistent tangent operators. The deriva-
tivesoftheconstitutive equationsareapproximatedbymeansofdifferenceschemes.
These derivatives are needed to achieve quadratic convergence in the integration at
Gauss-point level and in the solution of the boundary value problem. Numerical
differentiation is shown to be a simple, robust and competitive alternative to an-
alytical derivatives. Quadratic convergence is maintained, provided that adequate
schemes and stepsizes are chosen. This point is illustrated by means of some nu-
merical examples.

A volume of fluid (VOF) technique has been developed and coupled with an incompressible Euler/Navier–Stokes solver operating on adaptive, unstructured grids to simulate the interactions of extreme waves and three-dimensional structures. The present implementation follows the classic VOF implementation for the liquid–gas system, considering only the liquid phase. Extrapolation algorithms to obtain velocities and pressure in the gas region near the free surface have been implemented. The VOF technique is validated against the classic dam-break problem, as well as series of 2D sloshing experiments and results from smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) calculations. These and a series of other examples demonstrate that the present CFD method is capable of simulating violent free surface flows with strong nonlinear behavior.

CIMNE, Technical Report Nº PI-149, Barcelona, Spain
The paper describes how the finite element method and the finite volume method can be successfully combined to derive two new families of thin plate and shell triangles with translational degrees of freedom as the only nodal variables. The simplest elements of the two families based on combining a linear interpolation of displacements with cell centred and cell vertex finite volume schemes are presented in detail. Examples of the good performance of the new rotation-free plate and shell triangles are given.

A new computational procedure for analysis of the melting and flame spread of polymers under fire conditions is presented. The method, termed Particle Finite Element Method (PFEM), combines concepts from particle-based techniques with those of the standard finite element method (FEM). The key feature of the PFEM is the use of an updated Lagrangian description to model the motion of nodes (particles) in the thermoplastic material. Nodes are viewed as material points which can freely move and even separate from the main analysis domain representing, for instance, the effect of melting and dripping of polymer particles. A mesh connects the nodes defining the discretized domain where the governing equations are solved as in the standard FEM. An incremental iterative scheme for the solution of the nonlinear transient coupled thermal-flow problem, including loss of mass by gasification, is used. Examples of the possibilities of the PFEM for the modelling and simulation of the melting and flame spread of polymers under different fire conditions are described. Numerical results are compared with experimental data provided by NIST.

In this work we extend the Particle Finite Element Method (PFEM) to multi-fluid flow problems with the aim of exploiting the fact that Lagrangian methods are specially well suited for tracking interfaces. We develop a numerical scheme able to deal with large jumps in the physical properties, included surface tension, and able to accurately represent all types of discontinuities in the flow variables. The scheme is based on decoupling the velocity and pressure variables through a pressure segregation method which takes into account the interface conditions. The interface is defined to be aligned with the moving mesh, so that it remains sharp along time, and pressure degrees of freedom are duplicated at the interface nodes to represent the discontinuity of this variable due to surface tension and variable viscosity. Furthermore, the mesh is refined in the vicinity of the interface to improve the accuracy and the efficiency of the computations. We apply the resulting scheme to the benchmark problem of a two-dimensional bubble rising in a liquid column presented in [1], and propose two breakup and coalescence problems to assess the ability of a multi-fluid code to model topology changes.

A new bilinear 4-noded quadrilateral element (called QLRZ) for the analysis of composite laminated and sandwich plates/shells based on the refined zigzag theory (RZT) proposed by Tessler et al. [1] is presented. The element has seven kinematic variables per node. Shear locking is avoided by introducing an assumed linear shear strain field. The performance of the element is studied in several examples where the reference solution is the 3D finite element analysis using 20-noded hexahedral elements. Finally, the capability for capturing delamination effects is analyzed.

Deliverable D4.1 of project ASHVIN (Assistants for Healthy, Safe, and Productive Virtual Construction Design, Operation & Maintenance using a Digital Twin Project Acronym)
This document describes performance indicators that contribute to productivity, resource efficient, and safe construction works. Report also summaries the tools that will be developed within ASHVIN project and support tracking of progress of construction works. The most important tools and methodologies are: ASHVIN platform dashboards that provide a rich environment to consider and manage the performance indicators; Construction monitoring tool with productivity and safety KPI decision making dashboard (4DV-C); Privacy ensuring safety management, simulation, and training tool (SMT); A configuration management tool to track as-designed and as-built, as well as, to allow for seamless commissioning (CMT); Simulation-based real-time construction site and logistics planning tool (DES); Multi-physics model matching tool for status assessment of bridges and buildings (MATCHFEM); Lean project planning methodology. According to the interviews performed with managers of construction sites the number of times the site is getting organized and cleaned influences not only the safety of a site but also the productivity. In addition, the number of tasks that must be redone/corrected influences the morale of the workers and therefore the productivity of the work as well as the costs and the resources that are being used to finish up that task. ASHVIN project will support the calculation of following Performance Indicators: Percentage Plan Complete, Non-productive working time of professional, component properties, productivity rate, waste factor, number of concurrent trades on site, percentage of available space used, utilisation rate of equipment, number (and severity) of reported issues related to the accidents on construction site, safety factor, strength of structural components, cost of equipment and workers. Those indicators will be measured and checked on three ASHVIN demonstration projects: #4 Logistic hall construction in Germany, #5 Kineum office building in Sweden, #6 Office buildings in Spain.

This diploma thesis deals with the implementation of a fluid solver for incompressible and compressible flows within the multi-physics framework Kratos. The presentation of this environment based on the finite element method (FEM) and an introduction to multidisciplinary problems in general are the starting point of this work and help understanding the following steps more easily. Originating from the basic conservation equations for mass, momentum and energy, the Euler equations for inviscid flow are derived. In this context some approximations are presented that avoid the solution of the energy equation and allow the use of a general approach for the simulation of incompressible, slightly compressible and barotropic flow. The implementation of the incompressible case is outlined step-by-step: Having discretized the continuous problem, a fractional step scheme is presented in order to uncouple pressure and velocity components by a split of the momentum equation. Emphasis is placed on the nodal implementation using an edge-based data structure. Moreover, the orthogonal subscale stabilization - necessary because of the finite element discretization - is explained very briefly. Subsequently, the solver is extended to compressible regime mentioning the respective modifications. For validation purposes numerical examples of incompressible and compressible flows in two and three dimensions round of this first part. In a second step, the implemented flow solver is prepared for the fluid-structure coupling. After presenting solving procedures for multi-disciplinary problems, the arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) formulation is introduced and the conservation equations are modified accordingly. Some preliminary tests are performed, particularly with regard to mesh motion and adjustment of the boundary conditions. Finally, expectations for the envisaged fluid-structure coupling are brought forward.

Deliverable D7.1 of project ASHVIN (Assistants for Healthy, Safe, and Productive Virtual Construction Design, Operation & Maintenance using a Digital Twin Project Acronym)

Abstract One of the aims of this text is to show some important results in LES modelling and to identify which are main mathematical problems for the development of a complete theory. A relevant aspect of LES theory, which we will consider in our work, is the close relationship between the mathematical properties of LES models and the numerical methods used for their implementation. In last years it is more and more common the idea in the scientific community, especially in the numerical community, that turbulence models and stabilization techniques play a very similar role. Methodologies used to simulate turbulent flows, RANS or LES approaches, are based on the same concept: unability to simulate a turbulent flow using a finite discretization in time and space. Turbulence models introduce additional information (impossible to be captured by the approximation technique used in the simulation) to obtain physically coherent solutions. On the other side, numerical methods used for the integration of partial differential equations (PDE) need to be modified in order to able to reproduce solutions that present very high localized gradients. These modifications, known as stabilization techniques, make possible to capture these sharp and localized changes of the solution. According with previous paragraphs, the following natural question appears: Is it possible to reinterpret stabilization methods as turbulence models? This question suggests a possible principle of duality between turbulence modelling and numerical stabilization. More than to share certain properties, actually, it is suggested that the numerical stabilization can be understood as turbulence. The opposite will occur if turbulence models are only necessary due to discretization limitations instead of a need for reproducing the physical behaviour of the flow. Finally: can turbulence models be understood as a component of a general stabilization method?

We present some developments in the formulation of the Particle Finite Element Method (PFEM) for analysis of complex coupled problems in fluid and solid mechanics accounting for fluid-structure interaction and coupled thermal effects. The PFEM uses an updated Lagrangian description to model the motion of nodes (particles) in both the fluid and the structure domains. Nodes are viewed as material points which can freely move and even separate from the main analysis domain representing, for instance, the effect of water drops. A mesh connects the nodes defining the discretized domain where the governing equations are solved as in the standard FEM. The necessary stabilization for dealing with the incompressibility of the fluid is introduced via the finite calculus (FIC) method. An incremental iterative scheme for the solution of the non linear transient coupled fluid-structure problem is described. Extensions of the PFEM to allow for frictional contact conditions at fluid-solid and solid-solid interfaces via mesh generation are described. A simple algorithm to treat erosion in the fluid bed is presented. Examples of application of the PFEM to solve a number of coupled problems such as the effect of large wave on structures, the large motions of floating and submerged bodies, bed erosion situations and melting and dripping of polymers under the effect of fire are given.

This work presents a wing deformation analysis of a twin-sting-mounted commercial aircraft model. Twin-sting arrangements minimize flow disturbances around the model fuselage and tail; on the other hand, they cause important changes in the flow field around the wing and also increase aerodynamic interference at the wing and aeroplastic effects on the wing. In some cases, these effects can alter the normal downwash developed behind the wing, modifying the flow pattern at the tail. Consequently, when tail aerodynamics is a major concern, this kind of support interference should be carefully evaluated. The methodology developed in this work employs an unstructured FEM-based flow solver for computing aerodynamic loads. These loads are then transferred to a finite element structural model in order to assess the geometrical deformation of the wing caused by the torsional moment exerted by the supporting mechanism. The analysis described involves there different twin-sting support configurations taking into account angle of attack variations and Mach numbers spanning from subsonic to high transonic ranges.

An optimization methodology based on neural networks was developed for use in 2D optimal shape design problems. Neural networks were used as a parameterization scheme to represent the shape function, and an edge-based high-resolution scheme for the solution of the compressible Euler equations was used to model the flow around the shape. The global system incorporates neural networks and the Euler fluid solver into the C++ Flood optimization framework containing a library of optimization algorithms. The optimization scheme was applied to a minimal drag problem in an unconstrained optimization case and a constrained case in hypersonic flow using evolutionary training algorithms. The results indicate that the minimum drag problem is solved to a high degree of accuracy but at high computational cost. For more complex shapes, parallel computing methods are required to reduce computational time.

In this paper, the aerodynamic shape optimization problems with uncertain operating conditions has been addressed. After a review of robust control theory and the possible approaches to take into account uncertainties, the use of Taguchi robust design methods in order to overcome single point design problems in Aerodynamics is proposed. Under the Taguchi concept, a design with uncertainties is converted into an optimization problem with two objectives which are the mean performance and its variance, so that the solutions are as less sensitive to the uncertainty of the input parameters as possible. Furthermore, the Multi-Criterion Evolutionary Algorithms (MCEAs) are used to capture a set of compromised solutions (Pareto front) between these two objectives. The flow field is analyzed by Navier-Stokes computation using an unstructured mesh. The proposed approach drives to the solution of a multi-objective optimization problem that is solved using a modification of a Nondominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA). In order to reduce the number of expensive evaluations of the fitness function a Response Surface Modeling (RSM) is employed to estimate the fitness value using the polynomial approximation model. During the solution of the optimization problem a Semi-torsional Spring Analogy is used for the adaption of the computational mesh to all the obtained geometrical configurations. The proposed approach is applied to the robust optimization of the 2D high lift devices of a business aircraft by maximizing the mean and minimizing the variance of the lift coefficients with uncertain free-stream angle of attack at landing and takeoff flight conditions, respectively.

Invited Presentation at the Lomonosov University in Moscow
New industrial and didactic flow solutions based on new flow concepts are needed to meet the unprecedented requirements set by the dramatically increasing energy needs, the use of Thermoelectric didactive devices are neded for better environmental and industrial performance. We need improvements to existing solutions, such as better convective control with radical new developments thanks to thermoelectricity coupled with fluid dynamics descriptors such as PIV. also energy savings and reduction of adverse environmental impacts can come from multifractal concepts. The development of new flows both numerically and experimentally are important for solutions with fully resolved simulations because existing turbulence models cannot be applied indiscriminately on many untested new flow ideas.
One very recent example is the turbulent flows generated by fractal grids. Fractal grids are made from a structure, such as a square, repeated at different scales that allow higher mixing efficiencies.

This report documents the potential capabilities of adaptive inviscid flow calculations on unstructured meshes in three dimensions using the finite element method. The finite element formulation of the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations is based on a two-step explicit Taylor-Galerkin scheme. Adaptive remeshing is applied to enhance the numerical solution in the vicinity the shocks. Particular emphasis is put on the generation of unstructured tetrahedral meshes as well as in the discussion of estimating the error in the numerical solution. Finally, an application to a well-known 3D high speed flow problem is shown where adaptive remeshing techniques become essential to keep the computational cost within reasonable limits. Its results are compared to some seemingly best reference solutions using other algorithms.

Report UCB/SEMM 2000-01 - Dept. of Civil Engineering - University of California at Berkeley, USA
We present in this paper the characterization of the variational structure behind the discrete equa- tions defining the closest-point projection approximation in elastoplasticity. Rate-independent and viscoplastic formulations are considered in the infinitesimal and the finite deformation range, the later in the context of isotropic finite strain multiplicative plasticity. Primal variational prin- ciples in terms of the stresses and stress-like hardening variables are presented first, followed by the formulation of dual principles incorporating explicitly the plastic multiplier. Augmented La- grangian extensions are also presented allowing a complete regularization of the problem in the constrained rate-independent limit. The variational structure identified in this paper leads to the proper framework for the development of new improved numerical algorithms for the integration of the local constitutive equations of plasticity as it is undertaken in Part II of this work.

There is a considerable opportunity to improve the planning and control of construction work. The construction industry is still struggling to adopt to the digital revolution’s concepts due to complexity, uncertainty, the fragmented supply chain, the short-term thinking, and the culture of ad hoc solutions. The main purpose of this document is to describe the business and decision-making processes to support lean project planning, control, and risk management with digital twin data.
Additionally, this document also presents and describes a process model that has been developed for the construction phase. In this task, three demo-sites have been investigated. All three projects were building construction projects hence no infrastructure projects have been researched. To describe the designed process model, IDEF0-notation was used. A vital part of using digital twins to support process management and agile planning is the capture of data from the site.
The produced process model contains five different process groups: initiating, planning, implementing, controlling, and closing and is generally based on the demonstration sites within the ASHVIN project and applicable to constructions sites worldwide. From each demonstration site information was gathered considering how data-collection had been conducted on each site using various digital tools and how they corresponded to the different KPI’s within the project. The methods were then analysed and evaluated how they could be implemented in a work breakdown structure (WBS) and location breakdown structure (LBS). These methods in combination with the process model allows the team to detect issues, react and adjust the schedule to make the whole process smoother. It can assist them in planning when to take in certain disciplines and when to order materials.
During this task the demonstration projects were already in the construction phase, which meant that it was mainly controlling activities that could be conducted according to the process model. It would be interesting to be able to test the process model from the beginning of a construction project, in other words from the initiating phase. Multiple findings have been made throughout this study. The main takeaway from is how vital it is for a project to decide in an early stage the prerequisites that will be needed to control and affect the project during the construction phase. This is the reason why it is essential to make sure that the process model as well as the digital tools are applied in depth. The second point to be made is to understand that all the KPI’s mentioned in the results section can be collected using a multitude of different tools and methods.
This report has met its main purpose of describing the business and decision-making processes to support lean project planning, control, and risk management with digital twin data.

Within the framework of the GTS-LCS project (Grimsel Test Site – Long-Term Cement Studies), an in-situ experiment lasting about 5 years was started in 2009 to study water-cement-rock interactions in a fractured granite. Prior to the experiment, a tracer test was performed to characterize the initial flow and transport properties of the rock around the experimental boreholes. This study reports on the model interpretation of tracer test 09-03. The calculations were performed by means of a two-dimensional model (homogeneous fracture plane including 3 boreholes) using the Retraso-CodeBright software package.
In the tracer test, Grimsel groundwater containing the tracer (uranine) was circulated in the emplacement borehole during 43 days (zero injection flow rate). Circulation continued without tracer afterwards. Water was extracted at the observation and extraction boreholes. Results from a model sensitivity analysis comparing model results with measured tracer concentrations showed 3 cases where the evolution of tracer concentrations in the 3 different boreholes was satisfactory. In these cases a low-permeability skin affected the emplacement and observation boreholes. No skin appeared to affect the extraction borehole. The background hydraulic gradient seems to have no effect on the results of the tracer test. These results will be applied in the calculation of the initial flow field for the reactive transport phase of in-situ experiment 2 (interaction between pre-hardened cement and fractured granite at Grimsel).

An explicit dynamic structural solver developed at CIMNE for the analysis of parachutes is presented. The canopy fabric has a negligible out-of-plane stiffness, therefore its numerical study presents important challenges. Both the large changes in geometry and the statically indeterminate character of the system are problematic from the numerical point of view. This report covers the reasons behind the particular choice of solution scheme as well as a detailed description of the underlying algorithm. Both the theoretical foundations of the method and details of implementation aiming at improving computational efficiency are given. Benchmark cases to assess the accuracy of the solution as well as examples of practical application showing the performance of the code are finally presented.

We present a general formulation for incompressible fluid flow analysis using the finite element method (FEM). The necessary stabilization for dealing with convective effects and the incompressibility condition are introduced via the so called finite calculus (FIC) method. The extension of the standard eulerian form of the equations to an arbitrary lagrangian-eulerian (ALE) frame adequate for treating fluid-structure interaction problems is presented. The fully lagrangian form is also discussed. Details of an effective mesh updating procedure are presented together with a method for dealing with free surface effects of importance for ship hydrodynamic analysis and many other fluid flow problems. Examples of application of the eulerian, the ALE and the fully lagrangian flow descriptions are presented.

The Finite Point Method (FPM) is a meshless technique which is based on both, a Weighted Least-Squares numerical approximation on local clouds of points and a collocation technique which allows obtaining the discrete system of equations. The research work we present is part of a major investigation into the capabilities of the FPM to deal with threedimensional applications concerning real compressible fluid flow problems. In the first part of this work, the upwind biased scheme employed for solving the flow equations is described. Secondly, with the aim of exploiting meshless capabilities, an h-adaptive methodology for two and three-dimensional compressible flow calculations is developed. This adaptive technique applies a solution-based indicator in order to identify local clouds where new points should be inserted in or existing points could be safely removed from the computational domain. The flow solver and the adaptive procedure have been evaluated and the results are highly encouraging. Several numerical examples are provided throughout the article in order to illustrate their performance.
